Trail Reports

2020-2021 season

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Conditions are actually a lot better than B skis, but there are thin spots that have to be negotiated and things are on the bumpy side. I used a good pair (not my best) and avoided any additional "structure" on my bases. Skied Silver Strider, Sleigh Ride, XC Express, Nekoosa and Wolf Tracks. Overall, Wolf Tracks was in the best all around condition, very skiable with a little care. Really, I was thrilled given the amount of snow we have had and SOOO much nicer than the Lapham Peak Hamster Wheel I had been on up till now.

Skated Nepco, Sleigh Ride, Base Tornado, Red Pine. Trails are slightly inconsistent. Some trails silky smooth others some debris and waves. Certainly skiable and in good shape considering mild snow totals. Get out and ski your B skis!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
We missed out on a lot of that rain from yesterday so our trails are looking great for the holiday weekend. Groomers were out early Saturday morning grooming in the 1.5 inches of snow we received yesterday. New classic tracks have been set as well. A large chunk of the park was groomed up and ready to go for today! Trails have great coverage with about a 3” base. Groomers plan to be back on the trails Saturday night.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Groomers were out Thursday night and plan to be out again Friday night to touch up skate decks for the weekend. Even with a 2.5 inch base, trails are skiing very well! Expect some variability in the conditions with some areas clean and smooth, and others dirty and uneven. There are a few pesky rocks still around, but they are few and far between. Tracks are now set on a majority of the trails. The best skiing has been on the west side of the park (Tornado Alley, Survivor, etc), Wolf Tracks, and Lake Marie! Two of the photos were taken on Wolf Tracks. Happy Skiing!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Both
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
Wow! Better conditions than expected. Packed powder with half inch of freezing fog on top made for some silky smooth and fairly fast skiing at 30 degrees in the mid afternoon. Skating was good to very good on most trails I skied; I say good because some short sections of skate deck had pine needles, cones mixed into snow and some sections had just a wee bit of dirt showing. Classic tracks set throughout, 70% in very good to excellent shape, some grass showing in spots. On trail across the marsh quite a bit of grass showing but glide never compromised.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Today I skied 20.5 kilometers freestyle including C&D Express and Lake Marie, which is one of my favorites. There was fair snow cover on most sections of the trails with a few shallow areas here and there. Afternoon temperatures got up to 37 F which made the snow soft and slow whoever it was exposed to the sun. We definitely need more snow.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Beautiful ski this afternoon with pristine wilderness trails. They were newly tracked for classic skiing. The areas near the chalet could use a few more inches to cover the intersections. I skied about 5 km from the chalet where the coverage was excellent. Temperatures in the 20’s.

Skijored with fast snow. A few spots under the trees had grit on them. Once I was away from the chalet (it is closed due to the pandemic) the snow was undisturbed. Park at the back of the parking lot for more room to maneuver and porta potties. Temps warm.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
The Pisten Bully emerged out of hibernation today and the groomers set some classic tracks for the first time this season! Mother Nature gave us 3 1/2 inches of snow last night to play with. Trails are flattening out nicely and we’ve now got a 3 1/2 inch base. Grooming plans: Groomers are headed back out tonight and are hoping to get a long trail open for tomorrow!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, Rock skis ]
The trails received an inch of fluffy "refresher" snow last night which really helped conditions greatly after a busy weekend. Trails are skiing fairly well considering the low snow levels. Groomers were out with the Yellowstone Drags the last few nights so the skate decks are starting to flatten out a bit. Trails are still thin and bumpy, so we are recommending rock skis still. No classic tracks have been set. Keep doing your snow dances!
