Trail Reports

2020-2021 season
Reports 20 to 29 of 41    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
I started out on my good skis but quickly changed to B skis and I’m glad I did. The trails were nice and level but lots of dirty snow and occasional rocks. Everything was nicely groomed but needs a little more snow. Did not do the classic trails so that could have been different.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Lots of dirty snow and good amounts of debris throughout the trails. There's even an exposed rock here and there. The groomers have done what they can, but clearly more snow is needed. I skate skied everything except Mary's Frolic. I'd rate at good with some areas fair. Definitely B ski conditions.

[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Today I skied the Long Rider, including Bruce’s Roundabout. Conditions were very good except for Bruce’s Roundabout which was excellent! The only problem was dirty snow about the last kilometer back to the chalet. Kudos to the groomers, always an outstanding job. The skate deck was firm and freshly groomed and control on the downhills was about as good as it gets. Then, I went back out and skied Mary’s Frolic for a total for the day of 20 kilometers. A good day’s skating I would say.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Will finished grooming and setting track on the classic side of the system this morning and I took over and groomed up the skate side this afternoon. Overall conditions are pretty good with full coverage but there are some sections with leaf debris starting to work up to the surface again.

Grooming Secondhand
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Finally, a 4-inch snowfall allowed us to groom the trails we want to. Robert did the skate loops, then skied them and reports they are very good, safe for good skis. I groomed and tracked classic loops. Mostly good to excellent tracks, more deep set than anything we've been able to do with scant snow this year. Talked to a few skiers who skied classic and they thought it was great. Use your best skis safely.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Just skied a few of the skate loops and trails are in excellent shape. On my grooming report I recommended B skis but after my ski I can feel comfortable recommending good skis without any risk of damage.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Picked up 3-4" of snow overnight and just finished grooming all of the skate loops. Still recommending B skis since the fluffy snow compacted down quite a bit on the still thin base.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Finished setting track on all classic loops this morning. Some turned out quite well. Overall, most of it is fair to good, but there are a few sections, mostly on the last 2 kilometers back to the warming building, especially through pine thicket areas, where the tracks are quite shallow and brown. It's better than I thought it would be given our barely groomable amount of new powder snow. I would use B skis, although with care in the trouble spot areas good skis could be used. Keep doing those Heikii Lunta dances.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Groomed and continued with the never ending brushing on the skate loops today. With the daily dustings of snow, conditions continue to improve and the trails actually ski real well but we still have a thin base with some leaf debris and occasional snirt. Still recommending rock or B skis.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Just got in from skiing Short Cut and Wild Thing loops on the classic side. A 1/2-inch powder cover on both the skate side and tracks has covered all the brown spots. Tracks are mostly good, though thin in spots, especially in the pine thickets. I used my B skis but wouldn't hesitate to use good skis now. Will hold off grooming again until we can get a couple of inches more to keep from getting back down to brown in the thin areas. Overall, a very fine ski this afternoon.
