Trail Reports

2018-2019 season
Reports 11 to 20 of 41    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Newly groomed. Skate deck fairly soft but not bad. Classic tracks in great shape. Speed was an issue given the softer conditions but fortunately the snow temperature was not too cold. Lots of snow here, the deepest base in some years. Nice day to be out. Hopefully the trails will set-up overnight.

[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
First time out since Wednesday and I found 1-2 inches of new powder over recently groomed trails. Skate deck underneath was moderately firm, and chopped-up in a few places that I suspect was from soft conditions the previous days. All-in-all pretty good but slow. Did some double-pole drills in the tracks that were filling in, but once skied-in were not too bad. Snowed the entire time I was skiing, 10:30-12.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
We started skiing at 3:00. Skate deck had about one inch of new powder and growing over a firm base, icy underneath in spots but no problems setting an edge. Single digits above but still reasonably fast. I wasn't feeling too good so our skiing was limited to the west side of the main trail and the shortcuts. Tracks are buried, but someone skied in a couple of k's. Snowing lightly the whole time out, and on my drive home.

Skied many of the newly groomed trails this morning. Skate deck has firmed-up and several sections are in best condition of the season so far. Fast skating on the main trails. Deep Woods is ok, but still a little soft. Classical tracks are well-defined. Terrific skiing today, and as I left quite a few skiers out there.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
All trails are good to go. There are some soft portions and some areas where the snow is packed and was pretty fast. As the temp warmed up the snow got faster. Finland and Deep Woods both were pretty well groomed with some very soft areas.

Trails, skate deck firmer than yesterday. Somewhat slow at the start of my ski as the snow had not warmed up yet, and I had waxed warmer. Two hour later conditions were faster when the temperature climbed into the 20s and farther into my wax range. Classic tracks in very good shape too. More skiers than usual today.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle Secondhand
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Recently groomed so we skied on mostly virgin corduroy this afternoon. In general the skate deck is a tad soft and hollow in places, but not too bad. Windy and increasingly so as we finished and thus some drifting, but nowhere was the entire trail covered. Skied Finland and this was softer than the main trail. Mike New informed us that conditions in Deep Woods were similar. Coverage is excellent!

Skied the shortcuts. Conditions were cold and slow. Paul (groomer) was out grooming the east side. He said he would be back out tomorrow morning to finish grooming and setting track. The trails look great.

In spite of the cold and wind the trails were very good. Skate lane was faster then yesterday. Starting to snow as I left.

Trails were groomed and being groomed again this afternoon, the latter for setting the classical tracks. We found it pretty slow going for skating given that it was just barely above 0F, more so for me as I just haven't had it the last two times out. A few short stretches were a bit faster. Overall the skate deck was firm with about an inch of new, cold, and dry snow making the corduroy. Classical tracks appeared pretty good from what I observed.
