Trail Reports

2019-2020 season
Reports 18 to 27 of 46    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
1 to 2 inches of newly groomed powder over firm skate deck. As of about noon today, the new snow had a noticeable moisture content. I skied a very limited km of the trails due to an injury, but what I skied was fine - not super fast but not slow. Once again quite lovely out there.

Conditions virtually identical to yesterday afternoon. In places there has been significant deposition of hoar frost that both speeded things up and allow for greater control on an otherwise hard-packed deck. Beautiful out there too!

With the high school race yesterday, the trails have experienced a lot of traffic. But in most places the skate deck is packed and firm, if being a tad rough from that traffic. In those areas that were used less there were some soft spots. A warm-up loop was groomed just before entering the woods (maybe 0.5 k?) and today that skied excellently; very fun skiing there!

Some new grooming since I skied yesterday, but as of leaving (11:40) I cannot say how much as I stayed off them given their softness. However, trail sections previously groomed are in very good condition, firm with 0.5-1 inch of moist snow on top. Another skier reported Finland was very soft. Tracks were fine where I did some double poling. High school race on Tuesday.

Status quo here. In places the snow has little greater moisture content, and I found these stretches to be somewhat slower, but not slow. The cut-across on Finland has not been groomed, the trail now follows the normal route down to Isaac Lake and up the steep hill thereafter. Be aware that from the lake and for about 0.5 km the classic tracks are essentially in the middle of the trail making skating difficult, at least without marring the tracks.

Arrived at 3:00 to find the trails were groomed earlier in the day. Skate deck is firm with the new corduroy providing 1/2 to 1 inch of softer snow for edge setting and ease of turning. Reasonable fast and very nice out there today!

[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
Skied about half of the groomed trails. Skate deck was in most places pretty firm with some sugar on top. A few short stretches where the drifting was problematic continue to be a bit softer and hollow (you lose a foot or so of pole). Warm temperatures (30+ F) this afternoon, but remarkably, moisture content seemed low. Finland was not groomed beyond a couple hundred meters going in or out and has substantial drifts. Winds overnight deposited debris and leaf litter. Probably more of an issue in the classic tracks?

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Partial, Good skis ]
When I arrived at 3:00, several km of trails had been groomed recently and skied-in. Skate deck varied from reasonably firm with a veneer of about 1-2 inches of powder to softer and hollow where major drifting had occurred. Cold (1F) and slow going for me. Severe drifting in areas that were not groomed as I could see. As I left (4:00) the Pisten Bully was out on the trail, presumably busting through the drifts, and that was being followed by Paul going out and grooming. I skied about 0.5 km on newly groomed trail to get back to the car, and it was very soft - needs to set-up.

Paul the groomer was out working on the trails. He had set classic track and was working on some of the trails. He was working on about half of the trails. He said he would be out working on the trails again tomorrow. The classic track was setting up OK. The skate lane was still soft.

[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
A possible slight dusting and warmer temperatures (23F) softened the deck making the skating somewhat better than yesterday. Very firm/hard underneath. With care A skis can be used. Grooming was in progress as I left (3:30). High school race tomorrow afternoon.
