Trail Reports

2019-2020 season
Reports 35 to 44 of 46    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec
Friday, December 27, 2019
Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle Secondhand
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Another inch or so fell overnight, this on top of a firm skate deck making for moderately fast conditions between 11:30 until about 1. Very nice skiing today. Classical skier reported good conditions.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
A half to one inch new snow over firm base, skier packed skate lane. The new snow freshened-up the trails, and seemingly an army of skaters who skied earlier packed the deck which made for very nice, moderately fast skiing. New snow also buried some of the leaves in the classical tracks. Tracks were a bit faster that the skate lane.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Temperatures hovering just above freezing and high humidity (fog) resulted in high moisture content and softer, slower conditions. Still not bad. Classical tracks are glazed and are infinitely faster that than skate deck. Our wish to Santa is for more snow this weekend...

[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
The skate deck is softer in many places as the moisture content is greater. Still good skiing.

Skied early afternoon and trails were being groomed as we skied. I skated and Kayo Aslagson skied classical. Skate deck was moderately firm in most places, not super fast but fast enough for me as I continue to be plagued by the last (?) vestiges of a cold. In the stretches that get sun, the deck is harder and glazed but not icy. Classical tracks are holding up well, but glazed with a few dirty spots are appearing. As reported yesterday we covered easier ground so the conditions reported might not reflect other sections of the trail system. Temperatures were low 30s, but fortunately overcast or weak sun inhibited melting and kept snow moisture levels reasonable.

Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
After a forced hiatus of two days (sickness), I returned to the trails this morning and they continue to be in very good shape. Admittedly I didn't ski much of the trail system as I was trying to stay on less challenging sections. But on what I did ski the skate deck was firm and initially pretty fast. As I finished (noon) snow was getting moister and a tad slower. I saw no bare spots, there are a few more leaves, and some human footprint in places. Classic tracks still good.

Short, easy ski today as I have a cold. And not much new to report other than trails remain in good shape. We skied some sections that have had less traffic and they are quite good. We also came upon a short 5 meter section on Finland that is slush-ice. Apparently the culvert below froze solid and even the minimal melt has resulted in the impounded water overflowing onto the trail. Easy enough to ski through though. All-in-all with the milder temperatures (mid-20s), nice skiing.

Trails were groomed yesterday, and are in very good condition. Very firm skate deck. Classical tracks remain in great shape but the wind had littered some areas with a few leaves - emphasize few. Coverage is good, no bare spots to mention.

Conditions as same as yesterday, but somewhat faster given the warmer temperatures. Classical tracks remain faster. Nice skiing!

Semester is ending and I am finally able to get on the skis. Skiing today, like Friday and Saturday, has been pretty good. Trail coverage is quite good. Soft in spots, slow given the temperatures, but not too bad. As of today, the skate deck has seen a fair bit of traffic and thus a tad rough in spots, but also not bad. Double-poled in the tracks on and off and they are fast and in great shape. Overall good skiing and sure beats riding the trainer!
