Trail Reports

2019-2020 season
Reports 6 to 15 of 46    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec
Saturday, February 29, 2020
Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Initially (10:30) conditions were similar to those reported yesterday, if a tad slower. By noon sunny skies and temperatures around 34F the moisture content of the snow was slowing things down. Not having skied Finland in a while until today, there remains solid ice, perhaps 10 m, near the culvert just before the Isaac Lake crossing.

Newly scratched groomed when I arrived this afternoon (3 pm, 21F). Deck was hard and fast with enough tilled snow for edge setting. The only bad section was about 50 m leading up to the Pines and the Chuckwagon junction. Icy with lots of needles - a bad combination. Coverage remains very good (no "cancer spots") and other than the aforementioned, pretty clean.

Scratch grooming again post skiing yesterday. Conditions similar to yesterday as well, although the warm-up came earlier. Initially very good and fairly fast skiing, however, temperatures were in the mid-30s when I finished up around 11:45 and combined with brilliant sunshine, the snow was becoming quite moist and slow. Still, coverage is quite good and hopefully holds up.

Groomer went our prior to my ski and scratched up the skate lane which provided a surface of loose transformed snow. Fast when I arrived (10:30) as temperatures were in the low 30s, but slowing down a bit toward the end (12:20) as temperatures were well into the mid-30s. Snow on south-facing slopes and open areas was getting pretty moist. Coverage remains quite good.

Mixed bag of conditions. Firm-to-hard skate deck in shaded areas, covered with a thin veneer of high water content snow in the sunshine. Nothing bad though, moister snow is slow but not terribly so. Skied just before between 3:00 and a little after 4:00 while temperatures were 31-33 F. Coverage still quite good, but thinning in spots. Classical tracks hit or miss.

I skied a very limited km of trail this morning, but found conditions similar to what was reported yesterday. Some additional grooming post my ski yesterday.

Portions of the trail system were newly groomed when I arrived this morning. About 1/4 inch sugary corduroy over very firm skate deck. In places where drifting occurred due to the high winds, the "sugar" was deeper but very skiable. In a few other places the wind stripped the surface so a little harder and icier, but also no problems. Spend a bit of time flicking twigs and branches off the trail, especially on Haugs, otherwise fine. Overall quite good skating. Classical tracks marginal and absent along some stretches.

Trails remain in good condition. 1/2 to 1 inch softer powder on very firm skate deck. Pretty fast late this morning with temperatures in the mid-teens. As I finished (noon), temperatures had climbed into the low 20s with intermittent sun. Classical tracks are marginal - shallow and degraded - in many places.

For what, where I skied today the trails are in very good condition for skating. Very firm deck with corduroy. Flurries throughout my day providing another 1/2 inch on top. Finland has been groomed, but be aware the steep hill coming down to Isaac Lake is rutted and had a few "holes" that I found treacherous (yeah, I crashed as one ski was gravitationally attracted to a deep rut!). Sun came out for the last 5 minutes (12:30) and temperatures were going up into the teens.

Started skiing with about an inch of new, dry powder over a hard skate deck. Grooming was underway halfway through my ski (4 pm) that helped speed things up, but certainly slower than yesterday. Should be good tomorrow.
