Trail Reports

2020-2021 season
Reports 47 to 52 of 52    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
Skied the Onion River Road and West Oberg after the new snow. Tracks set up part way and on West Oberg. Skier tracks were well formed on the rest. Deck was soft and double poling did not get much purchase. But snow was plentiful and should provide great coverage once groomed.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
Skated Homestead and Hogback from Britain Peak Trailhead. The skate deck on connector and lower hogback was wavy and stubbley which made it hard to get a good rhythm going. Conditions got better as I climbed up Homestead but all and all, we need more snow to make for a smooth stubble free experience. The classic track looked way more fun as the tracks were well formed and did not seem to have much debris or stubble in them.

Morning
Firsthand: Classic Secondhand
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Skied from the Britton Peak trailhead, hitting Hogback, Homestead, and most of the easy loops. Conditions were improved from yesterday--the additional pass of the groomer has smoothed out the deck and classic tracks are set. There are, however, still some areas that are in early season/shallow snow condition (a bit of waviness/bumpiness, scrub branches poking through, and the occasional larger thing poking through that one can avoid if paying attention). The outer classic track/pole plants were still fairly soft in places. Lower Homestead had the most scrub poking through and the big (straight) hill on Bridge was pretty wavy--not sure how it would be descending, but the climb was fine. The Sugarbush website states that Picnic isn't groomed/tracked yet, but there did appear to be tracks headed away from O.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Skied (skated) up and back Onion River Road. New snow had made conditions lovely — no need to dodge anything.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Partial, B skis ]
Did two runs up and down Onion River Road on skate B skis. Had to dodge a few gravel spots and pole plants would hit gravel sometimes. But I did no damage to my skis, and was able to maintain a steady pace up and down. Tracks from the 2K mark were good and I did some double poling in them. Just one or two places where gravel showed thru briefly. It was great to be on natural snow after 200+K of the manufactured stuff in the Cities. It is a whole different experience! North Shore skiing has begun!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Partial, Rock skis ]
Only snow on Onion River Rd. First k has a few rocks and bare ground. But the rest was pretty decent. About 2-3 inch base but good enough to skate on some rock skis.
