Firsthand: Classic

It was a beautiful morning to ski. I skied the Oberg trail. It was not groomed for skating, but people were skating on the new snow. The classic trails were in great shape. I used good skis, no bare spots. Just beautiful is all I can say.

Onion River road has good coverage. It’s hard packed with a light layer of powder on top and pretty fast. A few icy spots in the first kilometer or so, but they’re avoidable. There’s also some minor debris in places. Besides Onion River Road, nothing has been groomed due to ice, water and slush.

Skied the Onion River Road trail, which was tracked. (Groomer was out rolling the skate lane while I was returning.) A bit of snow on top of the now icy base. The first segment (up to the 2k point) had some stretches where the ice was showing through and a few rocks that are easy to avoid. The last 3.5k segment was better--a couple of places that are better skied around, but the track set was in reasonable shape considering the weather from the past week. According to the trail association's website, other segments have more downed limbs, icy, and even flowing water and need to be cleared before those segments reopen.

Skied Sugarbush mid to late morning Britton Parking to H to I to D and back, then over to Onion River Road. Tracks were glazed but otherwise in excellent shape. A few soft pole plants. Due to the surprisingly warm night in the area and temperatures in upper 30's while skiing, would have done better with no-wax skis. Klister probably would have worked, but all I had was a couple of softer kick waxes. Striding on flat was good, uphills were tough, and downhill from H to I was scary fast on my skis. Just a couple of spots with debris in the track.

I skied from Onion River road on the connector trail to Homestead Loop. The track set was good. I used good skis. Minor needles and dirt in pines starting out. There was good snow cover, but with isolated dark spots that you could avoid or step over (1 ft or less) on upper Homestead. About 1k of icy track going from I toward J on southern exposure. So, generally good but maybe B skis if you are cautious.

Mid 30s and sunny. Warm day on the trails. Started at Britton Peak and did a short loop around Homestead and back. Freshly groomed! 99.999997% of the trail is perfection. A few dirt spots and a rock or two poking up. All are easily avoided. First day of classic this season--Looking forward to tomorrow's sore muscles!

Absolute amazing ski at Sugarbush. Skied the picnic loop. Fairly solid, clean tracks all around. Couple spots of weeds and dirt but if you want to use good skis they are super avoidable. Obvious that the snow at higher elevations is deeper. Very few lumps and it feels closer to mid winter conditions than early ones. We didn’t skate but when we got out of the tracks the skate deck was firmer than expected and the lone set of skate tracks looked like they weren’t sinking in too much at all.

Groomer had just finished rolling the west end out of Briton Peak around 1:30 pm and was going out to track. I left and went to the east Onion River trailhead. Onion River Road had been groomed and tracked up 2k and the rest was just rolled. I skied to the end of Onion River, but it was slow going in the rolled loose snow. Hopefully more grooming will be done tonight. Great to be on natural snow for the first time and plenty of it.

A few inches of fresh snow fell this morning while I was out. Started on Onion River Road to end, which was still too soft and not great skiing. I also skied ORR Parking lot to X and the Connector trail which were much more firm and better skiing.

Skied the Hogback Loop today at lunch. Skate deck was firm and skiing was overall good. The green connectors and the lower part of Hogback have a few spots with dirt and gravel poking through and many places with twigs poking through. The upper part of Hogback is in excellent condition! No other trails were groomed yet.
