Maintained by Elk River Nordic Nordic Ski Club, these trails have become a hot-spot for fantastic skiing in the North Metro. Trails are largely wooded over rolling terrain, but some sections have good climbs and descents. Trails consist of several interconnected loops and are aptly named--be sure to check out the "Top-of-the-World" and "Gravity Box" as well as "Wash Pond Flats" to the NE of the biathlon range. There is not a warming shack, but at least one port-o-potty at the main parking lot. Primarily groomed for skate (not always tracked for classic).

Firsthand: Freestyle Grooming

Last call for fresh, cold snow? My late afternoon half lap skate was exquisite. Trail conditions were quite good. There were a couple of exposed areas that the sun had crusted up a bit, but the screening left plenty of grip where I needed it. In an effort to use up every last flake, Ancient One and Captain Ken just finished their evening run with the medium screens. If you can call in late for work and ski Woodlands before it warms on Tuesday, we think you will be glad you did. Enjoy. The trails will likely close(temporarily?) sometime late tomorrow afternoon.

Grooming

Babe just reported in that he just finished a rare grooming run with Taxi. They pulled the medium screens, which coupled with tonight's cool temps should bring a big improvement to the mashed potato conditions we had today. And, there is only one way to find out how it is going to ski. Watch for possible trail closure on Wednesday and Thursday. Enjoy while it lasts.

Five new inches rolled curb to curb and ready for a nice soft ski. Evinrude came out of retirement to break trail for Ancient One and Lumberjack on the first shift run with the rollers. Wrong Way was waiting in the parking lot for them so she could start her morning ski. Chainsaw and The Natural took the second shift making a second pass around the outer loop to widen and firm up the middle and to roll the grade and winter walking trail. The Engineer reset our tracks on the flatter trails. Thanks to everyone who came out to enjoy Woodlands yesterday. Enjoy!

Skater's delight at Woodland Trails this late morning! I took the advice of a previous reporter and took the day to make the trek to Elk River to enjoy the fantastic conditions on the outer loop (10K per loop) and it was well worth it! Some of the cleanest snow I've seen lately, and incredible grooming. No classic tracks on 80% of the outer loop, but skating was fantastic. Getting a little soft and slow by noon, and poles starting to poke through, so I suggest larger baskets for your poles. Should be continued good skiing tomorrow morning!

The trails at Woodlands have setup fantastic, my poles did not poke thru the top crust at all this morning. The deck is smooth flat and firm. My suggestion is play hookie this afternoon and make a run to Woodlands. Enjoy it while you can. Don't forget gas for the snowblower on the way home.

If you have been waiting for just the right combination of snow, temperature and grooming to make a trip to Woodlands for an afternoon ski, tomorrow is the day. We expect the skate deck to be ask good as it can get. Shear-Pin just reported in that he and Captain Ken have just finished their evening 12mph run with the medium screens, including a third pass on the outer loop for full width grooming. Enjoy!

Refreshing temps, but beautiful trails and scenery. Thanks groomers for a fabulous skate deck! Woodland Trails don't offer the extremes of Murphy, but Woodland's terrain is still great and its grooming is always top notch (Murphy's not so much).

Chainsaw and Captain Ken finished off a great Saturday at Woodlands with an evening grooming run with the light screens for our Sunday skiing pleasure. On my early Saturday re-roll run with Evolution, large flat frost crystals (nearly dime sized crystals of Hoar frost, I think) were floating down from the trees on the east side of Terminal, covering the fresh snow. With the sun low in the ski and reflecting off the crystals, the forest floor looked like it was covered by millions of glistening diamonds. We had to stop and marvel at it for a bit. It was a good day. Enjoy!

After the grooming run and a little lunch I went back out to Woodlands to enjoy the trails. I wasn't the only one with that idea, we had a parking lot that was 3/4's full. Everyone I saw on the trails had a big smile plastered on their face. It was a great day to be at Woodlands.

Woodland got the full work out this morning. The entire system has been rolled curb to curb. And all tracks have been reset for your skiing pleasure. If you can enjoy the trails today, tomorrow sound a little chilly. The woodchoppers will be out first thing tomorrow morning.
