New Reports Report Requests

Notes

Maintained by Elk River Nordic Nordic Ski Club, these trails have become a hot-spot for fantastic skiing in the North Metro. Trails are largely wooded over rolling terrain, but some sections have good climbs and descents. Trails consist of several interconnected loops and are aptly named--be sure to check out the "Top-of-the-World" and "Gravity Box" as well as "Wash Pond Flats" to the NE of the biathlon range. There is not a warming shack, but at least one port-o-potty at the main parking lot. Primarily groomed for skate (not always tracked for classic).

Skied by headlamp tonight at Woodland. It was like skiing on a pillow with the fresh snow. I planned to skate but found myself dipping in and out of the virgin classic track to find some speed. Great coverage and everything was groomed, just slow with the fresh snow. Looking forward to hitting it Saturday after a little warmup on Friday.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
We didn't see that one coming! The trail crew were falling all over themselves scrambling to see who would get to go for a Monday evening Skandic ride. The Natural and Ancient One drew the long straws. They rolled our five new inches off "a light coating of wintery mix" almost curb to curb. I went out early this morning to make a third pass to widen the outer loop. Expect a soft, but enjoyable ride. The New Coach is going to lay down some tracks tomorrow morning. Enjoy!

The Saw Boss is out of town this weekend so instead of 3 hours doing chainsaw aerobics I traded saw chaps for ski boots and enjoyed a lap around the outer loop. Last nights grooming run added just a little more profile to the trail. It is flat and firm but with fair technic and good skis I had no problem getting an edge. Football season is done so there is no excuse for not making a afternoon run to Woodlands. Enjoy :).

Grooming

Artie and I pulled light over medium screens over the trail system. Most looked good...better in the woods than in the open areas. Enjoy!

Skate skied on flatter sections of the trail. Looks like last recent grooming has worked up the surface pretty well all over. Not much for classic tracks remaining but the skating surface is very good for getting an edge and controlling skiis. Some leaf litter and sticks down on trail. I believe the groomers will be out this evening to freshen up the trails for Sunday. Saw 3 whitetail deer jumping along the edge of marsh.

Snow conditions were excellent. Used my A skis with no problem. There were a consistent amount of small sticks and leaves on the trail I was able to dance around them. Thanks for the excellent maintenance of the trails Dave!

Outer loop is in fabulous shape. The little snow we received Sunday was rolled into magic carpet ride. All trails can use good skiis. The classic tracks have not been reset but still there is enough snow to make that fun outing also.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
We were hoping for a little new snow and that is what we got. On Sunday evening, Shear-Pin and The Natural rolled out our new 2 inches. Expect good conditions for skate skiing this week. No new tracks until we get more volume. Sunday morning the tree cutting crew nicked down and tossed another 22 dead trees along the trail. They will finish up that not so little project next Sunday. Enjoy!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Groomed the trails Friday night. P&D did a double grooming pass to restore skiing after last weeks melt. Trails east of the RR grade are skiable and fast. West of the grade trails remain icy. Classic track is melted icy and not skiable in most trail sections. Will reset classic track after next 2-3" snowfall.

DPR skied a couple of laps Monday evening to test the trail. He survived to tell about it and gave the trail his second lowest rating of plenty icy. For a pleasurable ski it would be best to ski elsewhere until we get snow.
