Notes

Maintained by Elk River Nordic Nordic Ski Club, these trails have become a hot-spot for fantastic skiing in the North Metro. Trails are largely wooded over rolling terrain, but some sections have good climbs and descents. Trails consist of several interconnected loops and are aptly named--be sure to check out the "Top-of-the-World" and "Gravity Box" as well as "Wash Pond Flats" to the NE of the biathlon range. There is not a warming shack, but at least one port-o-potty at the main parking lot. Primarily groomed for skate (not always tracked for classic).

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Babe and Shearpin rolled in the new nearly 3" surprise snowfall from this morning. The outer loop, city trails, biathlon and grade were all buffed up, all while saving the majority of those beautiful classic tracks laid earlier today. Woodlands is once again a winter wonderland worth the trip. The snow is not yet holding a snowball as Shearpin discovered when he tried to launch a sneak attack on Babe, so conditions should be favorable and not sloppy, at least through Saturday morning. Enjoy!

The Old Coach hopped on his sled today and didn’t get off until he put down some great classic tracks on all of the ski trails at Woodlands. So, if you have been waiting for tracks on the back 40 hills, that time is here. Enjoy if you can.

Woodland was freshly groomed for skate when we arrived this morning. Great coverage throughout the system. No fresh tracking, but tracks looked good on the inner loops and the Outer Loop starting at Washpond Flats.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Batman and Lumberjack just finished their evening run with the medium screens for our Sunday skiing pleasure. Lumberjack will be back out in the morning with a couple of the rest of the crew for week two of tree cutting. They will be out 8-11 starting at the Gravity Box and continuing around the outer loop. Enjoy.

Skied outer loop late this afternoon. Great coverage, nice snow surface easy to keep an edge on hills. Fun time, some sun shining through on mostly cloudy day.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Groomed all Woodlands trails for improved skate surface this evening. Light screening did a nice job of lifting off all the marks from todays skiers. Should be a nice ski Saturday and if you aren't fully satisfied try the winter hiking trail for a fabulous hilly and scenic hike. That also was groomed this evening for the weekend. Classic tracks remain on the trails where they usually are found, and the oak leaves do not seem to be in great number so striding should be fun also.

Warm temps causing that "creaking sound" as you skate along. Top surface was fast, somewhat glazed (but not slippery icy) surface, if you know what I mean. Can still get an edge, just not totally comfortable. I did some double poling in the tracks since this was very fast in places also. Finally saw my first white tailed deer as I skied along North Mickey, where have they been hiding? Snow coverage is fabulous and grooming will be done Friday evening so all should be fine for the weekend.

Skied early afternoon, found 1/2" of fresh snow over firm packed trail -- great conditions! Bright sunshine and all those hills made the low teens temperatures feel warm and even with the fresh coating of snow, the trails were still fast and very easy to get a good edge. Nice to see a classic track set nearly everywhere. Hopped in the tracks on a few downhills, skis felt like they were floating on air-suspension! Good skis, no problem. Another great day at Woodlands.

Oh baby! Now that's what I call skiing! Was a little slow in the tracks but my trip around the outside trail was pretty smooth. Appreciated the tracks left from the tree crew since it provided some ready made classic tracks on the long loop leading to Gravity Box.

When Wrong-Way came flitting up to our tree cutting crew this morning, she had a big smile on her face. She said skate conditions were “great”. The trail had firmed up nicely yesterday with the falling temps allowing PE and Doc to pull the light screens instead of roll. The screens leveled the trail nicely and Friday night’s frozen mist mixed with the snow added some speed. The Old Coach laid down some really nice tracks this morning, as planned. Enjoy!
