New Reports Report Requests

Notes

Maintained by Elk River Nordic Nordic Ski Club, these trails have become a hot-spot for fantastic skiing in the North Metro. Trails are largely wooded over rolling terrain, but some sections have good climbs and descents. Trails consist of several interconnected loops and are aptly named--be sure to check out the "Top-of-the-World" and "Gravity Box" as well as "Wash Pond Flats" to the NE of the biathlon range. There is not a warming shack, but at least one port-o-potty at the main parking lot. Primarily groomed for skate (not always tracked for classic).

Skied the outer loop yesterday and today. Conditions were good with a few icy areas on the climbs. The tree cover on a cool windy day like today made it so much more enjoyable. The plan is to groom tonight and tomorrow night so expect good skiing this weekend. Thank you to Dave and the groomers for a wonderful year.

The boys were back at it this evening. Lefty and Trapper just finished their evening run with the Godzilla screens. They are both planning to ski tomorrow, so it must have groomed up ok. So, if you are not yet over winter, Woodlands is still an option. Enjoy!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Saturday's rain/sleet/snow event concluded at Woodland trails with 2 inches of light powder. All trails were rolled Sunday morning and look to be in good skiable condition. While the base below the new snow is water saturated, no puddles or wet spots were observed during grooming. Not possible to reset tracks until the base below the new snows cools but fresh snow in the old shallow tracks should offer an improvement over the past few days.

Trail was in fair to good condition. It has not been groomed since the earlier-in-the-week thaw. It was skateable - I got bite with no problem - but it was very hard packed. Sun-exposed uphills were moderately rutted and there was enough frozen tracks on the downhills including the extended runouts that I was snowplowing a lot. Just didn't trust myself to not get trapped in one of those tracks and be unable to skate a turn. A few spots of lightly snow covered ice that were of no consequence on Wash Pond Flats. A few spots of heavy bark litter. Classic track was totally washed out wherever I noticed on the perimeter trails. I used FastWax Blue LF. It was low 20's and overcast. Woodland put me straight. Just because I had an easy, fast ski at Hyland yesterday, that didn't mean I could easily skate to the to the top at X2, it was the usual slow slog for me. But once there I had a pretty good run on the way down up until the climb around Maple Hill. Thought about skipping Scouring Rush but persisted and finished a decent but not great ski.

Had fabulous sunrise greet me at Top of the World today. Trails are in great shape. Some were groomed last evening and some not but all had adequate loose snow for edging allowing control. Classic tracks looked great also.

Babe and Basketball Guy pulled the tandem screens around the outer loop this evening, just in case anyone is interested in playing hooky from work tomorrow. Enjoy!

Lumberjack just reported in that he and The Natural (fresh back from Florida) had finished their evening grooming run with the medium screens to buff up the skate trails. Expect very good conditions for your Sunday ski. There was a surprising amount of traffic at Woodlands today considering the number of skiers (including about half the trail crew) that headed east for the big skiing celebration today. Enjoy!

Ski Dad and Buckthorn Bob were out on the sleds Friday evening regrooming the system for the Saturday ski. The snow from earlier this week screened out well. It is not yet fully transformed, so still has that nice fresh snow feel. All trails were groomed. Tracks are set west of the RR grade and on Washpond flats. Minimal leaves in the tracks. With a forecast low of 4F snow will be slow early and will be fast and fun later. enjoy!

Lovely conditions. A little slow with last night's inch or so. But the base is really strong and I didn't notice any spots of concern whatsoever. Great work Refuge Guy, EIEIO, Babe and whoever else makes this place great. It was my first time and the outer loop was an absolute treat.

Refuge Guy and EIEIO were out with the rollers Wednesday evening to let a little more air out of the snow. Earlier in the day, Babe rolled the third pass on the outer loop and Evolution put down some very nice tracks on the flatter trail sections. You might want to avoid the Stony Rollers loop on the east end if you are using your best skis due to the icy sections. Enjoy!
