Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Excellent conditions, track set perfect on fresh snow overnite. Skied A, B, D , H and Y loops. Also skated D and Y loops - slow at times due to fluff and clumps on the skating deck, but saw groomer going over a second time to smooth some trals.

Had a "therapy day" off from work and drove up to Valley Spur after reading Skinnyski reports. Worth the long drive and the great view of wind-driven waves along Green Bay. Conditions were soft due to the fresh snow so I had a long classic ski. Tracks (and skate lane) were great and the wind was howling with gale warnings on Lake Superior. A small number of frozen spots where I assume recent warm weather melted into pools. Stopped to toss off any down tree branches along the way. Whoever finally hit the on switch for lake effect snow in Munising - thank you! By the way, SWIX VR30 kicked like a mule.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
We received around 5 inches of lake effect snow last night and today with snow still falling at 1pm. Rolled and set track on all trails this morning starting with C and Y. Another 2 inches or so had fallen on that segment by noon. Skating would be on the soft side but the classic track was real nice. Grooming plan: We will be doing a full groom in the morning.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Hard to believe but today was the first time this year we groomed all trails with our big Ginzu groomer. Wow! We have gotten about 4 to 5 inches of measurable snow in the last 3 days and that has allowed us to get the system in near mid Winter condition. No noticeable thin spots but there are just a few spots on some trails that have some vegetation poking through. The skiing is very nice right now.

[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
All trails were groomed this morning. I skied B, H, and D. Some small branches sticking out and watery “potholes” on H. Fluffy and good for falling - I tested this myself.

Groomed skate lanes on A,B,D,X,Y,W,G return as well as the 2 middle loops on G which have Big Foots and Le Mans on them. Very skiable. Skating remains very good and the classic track is glazed but still solid. Looks like a good chance for snow in the next couple days so we can freshen up the tracks too. We have a thin but very solid base and when we get some snow things will shape up quickly.

Skied A, B, C, D, Y, W this morning. Snow is holding up despite a couple of really warm days. Everyone seems to need snow right now and I’m thankful to be skiing. Thanks to the groomers for their efforts!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
H trail is now opened up and groomed for both skate and classic. Typical early season low snow conditions. No track set through Worels Woods but descent conditions on both sides of it. The rest of the system is holding up pretty well all things considered. Todays 37 degrees and partial sun are not helping matters but shouldn't cause any real damage to the trails other than make the tracks very fast and hard early in the day. We will be grooming the skate lanes regularly but simply don't have enough base to reset a track until we get some fresh snow. Very rare day that we are begging for snow at VS this time of year! Think Snow!

Frosted trees, groomed trails and sunshine made for a spectacular ski with my husband (skate ski) and myself (classic) at Valley Spur this afternoon!

Conditions are holding up well even with the bit warmer daytime temperatures. Classic tracks are still solid most everywhere. The Heavens are getting a bit beat up from all the traffic so exercise caution when coming down those. Groomed skate lane on A, B, C, D, G, I, W and Z this morning. Skating on B, Y and W are exceptional. Hoping for some snowfall soon so we can freshen up the whole system. Plan to get H opened up sometime this week.
