Trail Reports

2018-2019 season
Reports 21 to 30 of 30    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec
Tuesday, January 1, 2019
Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Surprisingly good on 90%. The climbs had a fair amount of leaves, but anything flat was decent despite the thin base. Maybe 3 plus inches yesterday and last night. The lighted loop was particularly good for skating and classic, although no classic track. The short manmade loop in by the downhill had a rock solid track.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Rock skis ]
The trails have been packed with the 1 to 2 inches of fresh snow. There are still some thin spots and rough areas. However you should be able to ski all the trails. Would recommend rocks ski just to be safe. No track is set at this time.

Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
Man made snow loop in great condition after the big rain. They must have tilled to work up soft snow and only minor sticks worked up in one area. If skiing prior to downhill hours, the downhill area is available for long gentle climbing.

[ Rock skis ]
Just skied 90 very pleasant minutes. The artificial snow loop around the Lodge warrants race skis - but the loop is only 0.7K and the lodge is closed (but only a 3-4 minute ski from the side parking lot). The lighted loop is 1.4K... yes, there are a few bare spots and rocks, but easy to see and ski around. They scratched up the surface so it was easy to get an edge when needed and also very easy to ride a flat ski. Finally, I went out out the main trails and skied "Out Back" by the gravel pit - I was pleasantly surprised, as even though the trails were not scratched up, I could always get and edge and also comfortably ride a flat ski (though I did avoid the big hills)! In summary, use rock skis to be safe, but I would not consider the trails icy or unsafe in any way... now that comes from a 30+ year Birkie skier... non-racers would probably call the trails marginal and unsafe, whereas I had a blast and will ski again tomorrow!

Grooming Secondhand
[ Trails Open: Partial, Bare ground ]
Most trails are in poor condition. The man-made snow loop is in very good condition and a track has been set. The hills are in very good condition too. Unfortunately the lodge will be closed this weekend and the 24th and 25th.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
The newly lighted loop was freshly groomed and perfect ski conditions. The trail going up to the main ski lodge was freshly groomed & good condition. The blue and red loops had fresh soft snow on top of the trails. There was plenty of snow coverage, very few bare spots, and no ice. Great day of skiing but expect uneven surface.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle Secondhand
[ Trails Open: All, Rock skis ]
All trails have been packed but the base is thin. As you would expect with a thin base, it is bumpy and dirt showing in a few places but it is very skiable. The green loop seems to have the most dirt showing. The building is not open and the guy making snow said it might not open until the downhill slope opens.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
The 5 inches of heavy snow has been rolled on pretty much all the trails. It's really not bad for skating except for some sticks and leaves stirred up by foraging deer. There is not enough snow for classic tracks.
