Trail Reports

2019-2020 season
Reports 11 to 20 of 81    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec | Nov

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Rock skis ]
I skied the entire system and it really wasn't that bad. I'd call conditions fair. I didn't see any rocks, but there were a couple bare ground spots which could be skied around and some icy patches, though with temps in the 30s, they were not rock solid. Hills in the woods still had coverage, and I could still ski the downhills in the woods with enough control that it didn't feel unsafe. The temps being in the mid to upper 30s definitely had a role in this, otherwise I'd expect ice if you went when colder. It was nice to get a ski in off the man-made loops when I thought all would be closed.

Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
This report is for the manmade snow loops. Generally good conditions for skating this morning. The trails were groomed with the ginzu overnight and have a shallow layer of powder over the solid, thick manmade base. Some segments are very good to excellent, while others have pine debris and twigs that are degrading the surface. There are tracks, but they are very old. Downhills are a little icy, but not too bad. I suggest 'B' ski only because of the dirt and debris.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
Upper blue loop at homestead good , no bare spots, slow as the tracks were set but softening. Good skis fine. Hope they keep it open and closed to foot traffic.
Lower blue had three bare spots on tracks on western end but manageable.

Evening
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Tracks had lots of debris and icy spots. Skate deck was icy hardpack with minimal ability to control skis. The manmade loop was nominally better.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle Secondhand
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
2" snow followed by rain and then groomed into frozen corduroy made for icy like conditions on a hardbase. I chose to ski the lower manmade loop rather than risking the icy conditions of the magic carpet. I was able to get enjoyable skiing. They reported to me when I left that they would be grooming tonight so it should be much better tommorrow.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
I took the PB out again this morning for the last time. We dismantled the PB and loaded it on a truck and sent it off to its next grooming location in Michigan. We will have a new Snocat at the park for the 2020-2021 ski season, and well into the future. Wow! If you have skied at Lapham this ski season, you know a new Snocat is going to be a trail changer. I groomed the whole man-made loop and the green trail. Enjoy, because we are probably done grooming for the season with the state of the art snow cats.

Fantastic conditions at Lapham on Sunday. Kudos to all the groomers for creating some of the best skiing I've seen there in years! PB groomed section on the manmade plus the extension into South Field was level, flat and firm. Full depth classic tracks and a fast skate deck made for a very enjoyable ski. The rest of the black trail was also in great shape - some oak leaves to manage but no other debris of note. Thanks to Beattle for showing what a great groomer can do!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
I took our PB demo out at night and groomed the entire man-made loop. Also groomed the entire green loop and did a pass up and down the big slide. With the beautiful sunshine, the skiing should be great. This is the last Sunday before the Birkie, so come out and get some skiing in.

Classic tracks were stellar and hard packed on the front loop. The back side was groomed but was a tad sloppy at times but didn't prevent a good stride. Overall good conditions with only some minor wood exposure going up some of the bigger hills. Very excited to see Lapham using a new groomer! Thank you trail staff for making the best of a mild season.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Once again I took advantage of having the Piston Bully demo at the park for the week. For the first time in Lapham Peak‘s park history, I took the Snocat off the man-made loop and groomed the entire green trail. Also making a pass up and down the big slide, setting a track so the brave can get in a tuck and enjoy the speed and beauty of one of the bigger hills at the park.Enjoy skiing everyone at Lapham. Mother nature finally is giving us the opportunity to ski the whole park, hallelujah!
