Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Trail grooming equipment is back in order! Now we just need some fresh snow to push around! Went up today and did what we could, but the trails are largely iced over. Pray for fresh snow. 1 k, 2k, and 4k loop are technically open but ice and hard packed. Skate deck has a few spots where a little bit of grass is poking through and easily avoided. There is a classic track but it is icy in some parts and washed out in others. Your volunteer grooming grew is doing the best we can given the natural conditions we have to work with.

Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Tricky conditions at Hiawatha on Sunday with the light snow on top of hard, packed ice. it was more like a frozen lake than a golf course. The ski trail is very slippery and unpredictable, but skiable if you like super hard skate decks and/or double poling. Many of the skied in tracks had been wrecked by the weather. Some trail segments are better than others. There is still enough snow pack for crusty touring all around. Hopefully more snow can help set things right.

I don't often say I didn't have fun... the tracks were iced over. I'd say the skate deck was icy too.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Partial, Rock skis ]
The recent weather was not kind to Hiawatha. We groomed the 1k loop as much as possible for the MYSL sessions this weekend. The 2k loop and beyond has stretches of glare icy that didn't respond to the groomer. 1k loop should be good enough for the MYSL sessions and some short laps.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions were fine- hard and fast- wanted to stay on my inside edges. Some classic skiers out. Tracks looked ok in spots but probably better for double pole.
But the main reason for this report, there was a pair of coyotes ambling across the course heading toward the lake. Sharpen those carbide tips!

Evening
Firsthand: Classic Secondhand
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Skied the course at sundown and found it icy overall, with dirt showing through on the more worn patches, and classic tracks washed out pretty frequently. Groomers are waiting on a mechanical issue and haven't been able to attend to the course for a week.

For the most part, the deck was fine, but thin. There was a number of spots with ground poking through and a few icy spots as well. Overall, the tracks seemed to be pretty minimal. The loop could definitely use more snow, but I was still able to get a decent 10k in.

Pleasantly surprised with a fresh groom after work today and good conditions at Hiawatha. Still enough icy/thin patches to warrant B skis with our lack of snow the last couple weeks, but the groomers have kept the loop in great shape.

Night
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
I classic skied the 4k loop twice, starting at 7:30PM. For night skiing, visibility from ambient city light on these trails is decent if you have a headlamp to see the trail ahead of you. No steep hills will sneak up on you on this course but I did have to stop quickly a few times for windswept tracks. Watch out for a few bare spots as well. Otherwise, I was able to move pretty fast on the places that still had good track shape.

Evening
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Started around 5:30 pm. Skate deck was firm but still gave some to get an edge. It was starting to get icy spots as the sun set and temp dropped. There were a few large areas of dirt/grass but easily avoidable. Many areas that had wind-swept snow but not too deep. Classic tracks looked shallow and washed out/ snow covered in many spots. The wind was brutal on the parts of trail that faced directly into it. Ended my ski seeing a coyote going the opposite way down the trail.
