There is a high school ski race at Hiawatha tomorrow! I can't remember a high school race at Hiawatha. We put down parallel classic tracks on the first 2k of the multi use trail to the left of the course markings. Cleaned up the skate deck and it remains firm and in good condition with the usual grass spots. The classic track on the ski trail is fine, and it's too thin out there to reset right now.

Grooming

Groomed the 2K and 4K trails for skate and set a new classic track. Also groomed the multi use trail. With the new snow overnight, things are starting to shape up nicely. Still a few thin spots but overall the trails are looking good. Have fun skiing!

Best conditions I've seen in years here. Faster than expected on blue. The couple of inches stuck to the ground uniformly. They were just wrapping up a full groom at 11:30 this morning and it was already skiing very nicely throughout.

Great job, groomers! Classic track was better than expected. The few bare spots are easy to avoid. The fresh snow made for a nice layer on the hard pack snow. Fast and smooth conditions.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Hiawatha is groomed with a classic track that is not pretty, but it will have to do for now. A few grass spots poke through but Hiawatha is super wide so you can avoid the snirt. There is a practice area in the driving range with 8 parallel classic tracks. Multi use trail is in great shape.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Hiawatha groomers put down many laps with the roller and groomer in an effort to make the new snow stick to the existing crust. It should be good skiing on Sunday with just a few grass spots popping through. We will try to get out tomorrow to groom and set a classic track.

Classic skiing at Hiawatha was pretty good early this evening. The tracks had iced up since the thaw, but have filled with enough snow to be pleasant. I didn’t try skate, but it seemed pretty icy. Also, I found a working Samsung phone on the trail and left it on the ski racks near the parking lot, just in case its owner sees this.

The snow seemed to help conditions. There is a little bit of drifting snow but it was welcomed as a break from the hard pack and icy stuff. There is still a fair amount of ice and hard pack but it is skiable.

Break out the backcountry skis, or whatever you've got with metal edges (Nordic skates?). The skate deck was 90% glazed and the classic tracks looked to be completely glazed. The multi-use trail was skiable (barely) though bumpy, and the few spots where there was still some corduroy on the skate deck were actually pretty nice. But most of it was an exercise in slipping, sliding, and skittering. Not much fun. Also looked like some of the grass spots were getting more exposed (though still avoidable). I'd wait until we get a bit more snow and the groomers can do another pass (it was in pretty great shape before this most recent deep freeze!).

Very hard packed and slippery snow, but still skiable on the skate deck. There were just a few icy spots where I had to double pole. Frequent grass patches, but nothing I wasn't able to avoid. If one skied in the classic tracks, they'd probably have to pop in and out of the tracks with some regularity. I'd feel fine with B skis, but others might use rock skis. Extremely fast conditions.
