Trail Reports

2019-2020 season
Reports 7 to 14 of 14    Month: Feb | Jan

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Rock skis ]
Skate track is functionally unskiable — frozen ruts and bare patches. Crust skiing however was very good as of 8:30 am for the obsessed/desperate/time-pressed eager to get in a double pole or interval workout on the hill.

About 2” has fallen and the park staff groomed at about 1:00 PM. Very consistent deck and now path avoids logging at south end of 6th hole. The new snow is warm and compacted easily and well. Grateful for the regular grooming, snowfall and distance from home / work for many skiers.

Just groomed skate lane, very flat-good coverage. Groomers did a great job getting the ruts out of the corners.

Groomer had recently gone around for the second time the first was right after the storm. It made a huge difference and made for a very good skate experience. The track is level and forgiving. The only bummer is the logging disruption on the east end of the 6th hole. Otherwise very good conditions.

Good snow cover with just a little debris. The classic tracks on golf course looked good. Skating was challenging on the curves and other areas because of big ruts that occurred during grooming in soft conditions this weekend. The straight aways were firm and in fairly good shape. Because of tree work, the XC ski course is not including the hill on hole #4 along Good Hope at this time. Thanks to Tim and the park staff who plan to groom again Monday afternoon.

Skate trail: Remember what it's like to ski across Lake Hayward in a bad year? Crusty, crunchy, trail-such-as-it-is here and there obliterated by blowing snow. Well, add some hills to that and you pretty much have Brown Deer Trails today. Frozen tundra. The groomers are doing what they can, with what they have. Very difficult to work on technique skating out there, given the uneven, mildly rutted, and mostly hard skate deck. Deep ruts on some turns; use caution on those. The course is covered with snow but not deeply. If you have larger basket polls use those, otherwise you are going to be punching through. You can probably use your A skis without fear of damage. Classic track: What I was told was folks walking on it (with snow shoes!), but better than nothing.

Grooming was completed earlier today. The snowmobile left those annoying tracks that redirect a skates ski into the skimobile track and when the course turns there were deeper marks left but with additional passes it should shape up and there’s plenty of cover. Really no fear of skis to pavement or pole tips other than where trail turns. Worth a go if you are in town. Classic track set on woods side though I did not ski there.

Morning
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: Partial, Rock skis ]
Golf course was groomed for skating but base is very thin with some cart path visible. No classic tracks set but there is enough snow on the golf course and around the woods to use classic skis. Best snow coverage is north of the woods. There are icy spots and debris on the trails in the woods, so I’d ski on the perimeter.
