Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
We groomed the 6" of fresh snow we received yesterday. Skate and track were set on all trails except for Atomic drop. We might abandon the trail for the rest of the season. There's plenty to ski though. Conditions will be soft, hopefully it will set up. We are planning on grooming again on Friday depending on how much snow we get Wednesday and Thursday. It's been a struggle, but the conditions of some of the best in years.

Fun to ski the rolling terrain of sugar hills. It had been groomed a few day ago. Decent tracks with a few leaves here and there. Skate lane good but fast on the downhills. Looks like the had gotten a couple inches of fresh snow earlier in week. I hadn't been there since the state meets of the 80's. There's a new warming house. Very nice.

I skied 50K out here today. After the rain and refreeze, the skate deck is really nice and firm. The classic track is a little shallow in places because it's hard to set a track in rock hard snow. ( Even a Pistenbully is challenged in these conditions as I discovered when I groomed at Mt Itasca a couple days ago). The glide on the skate deck was not as good as I anticipated with the temperature in the upper 20s. Maybe it had to do with the crystal structure after some thick frost overnight. A change of skis to something with more structure helped. My new classic skis were best for glide. Anyway, I took one or two excursions off the trail on top of the refrozen snow, once to locate a flock of evening grosbeaks I was hearing, and the other time to ski the length of Long Lake. Crust skiing has started a month early!

Amazing firm powdery virgin corduroy skate deck. Perfect conditions! Classic trail looked a bit shallow - but saw a couple skiers out enjoying classic tracks as well. Huge thanks to groomers for awesome job! What a great trail system!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
We groomed all trails except for Atomic Drop. We had about 1" of new snow to work with over a frozen base. We set classic track, some of it good, some washed out. All in all though, it should ski well after the trail sets up.

We groomed skate lane and track today, except Atomic. Trails in very good condition. Lots of wolf tracks and scat, snow dropping off trees beware.

The heavy snow is still working its way out of the tree canopy bringing assorted debris with it. Easy enough to avoid. The snow coverage is deep and the base has some cushion as the leveling process is ongoing. Tracks were intact throughout. Most trails recently groomed. Beautiful scenery and the cold powder provided good glide.

It was a nice day to use the classic technique! The tracks were set well, and the snow was firm so that few (if any) pole plants sunk deep into the snow. I skied around the whole area a couple times. In a lot of places, the snow really hasn't come off the trees since the storm in mid-December. It's a beautiful, wintry landscape!

Skated Lake Loop. Trail was in real nice condition. Low snow temp (air temp around 0 F) made for poor glide. Returned and grabbed classic skis for a run around Thunder and East loops, which was a bit more tolerable in these cold snow conditions.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
We groomed all trails this morning/afternoon. The classic track should be fairly good everywhere. It might get shallow from time to time, but will still ski well. The skate lane gets better with each grooming and should ski pretty well. Atomic drop should finally be ready for all you speed demons. We will probably not be grooming again until the temps warm up a bit, hopefully later next week.
