Trail Reports

2021-2022 season
Reports 3 to 12 of 53    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec
Monday, February 28, 2022
Evening
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Rock skis ]
Skied everything north of 394. Some very thin spots and areas with small snow or ice "bridges" across bare ground were holding steady this afternoon. Outside of the sketchy spots the trail was actually in decent shape, even with some footprints from walkers in places. If you want to ski Butler or Quaking Bog I'd recommend getting out there very soon.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
I skied the Oakvik, Bog, and Erickson trails this afternoon. The classic tracks were in pretty good shape--thanks to the Theo groomers. Fast conditions in the shade and slow in the sun! I always enjoy the Oakvik Trail with all the hills and great scenery. I finished up my ski at the Trailhead on the snowmaking loops with their pristine tracks! It was definitely a warm afternoon going from 38 at the start to 43 when I finished!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Both
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Beautiful day on the golf course, tornado alley, JD gardens, jar hill, bog and flower gardens. The bog seemed to have a lot of foot traffic but still decent. Great tracks. Super skating. Fast.

Classic skied during today's gentle snowfall on the natural snow trails: Skyline, Tornado Alley, and JD Rivers. Great conditions the whole way. The only icy spot was under Hwy 55.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Trails were groomed but still soft after yesterday's snowfall. On Antawin, the trail seemed to end briefly at the Eloise Butler Parking lot where there were lots of construction vehicles (it was posted with "trail narrows" signs but the trail seemed to disappear unless I missed it). I was able to ski through the parking lot but it wasn't ideal. The Bog section was frustrating with the large number of walking tracks on the ski trail. The Bog is my favorite section of trails but was really torn up from walkers this year.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
I skied the Wirth Lake trail, and then from Wirth Lake to the trailhead. There was more coverage than I expected, but the bridges and a few other places on the Wirth Lake trail were very icy. There were also several thin spots, which were pretty avoidable.

Wirth lake trail was excellent. Crossing the lake was super windy, but once in shelter, the trails were great, with little ice or bare spots.

Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Rock skis ]
Eloise Butler and the Bog are a bit icy - no recent grooming - and lots of forest debris from yesterdays wind. Good with rock skis and a willingness to practice your balance. Natural snow trails north of Glenwood are in fantastic shape, so I highly recommend checking those out!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Eloise Butler, Quaking Bog, and Brownie Lake were groomed this morning and are in excellent condition. Classic tracks were not set. Occasional skied in tracks were in place and were left undisturbed to the extent possible while grooming. I would rate the entire system good for good skis, but there are a few, mostly avoidable dirty spots here and there. Trails between Glenwood and the Trailhead were groomed last night and are also in great shape.

Evening
Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
Quick evening loop: Bridge > Tornado > JD Rivers > Jar Hill. Classic tracks all along the way. Base is a little icy but not awful. Decent number of skiers out but not too busy. Good stuff fell last night, it was nice to try it while we still have it.
