2021-2022 season

Firsthand: Classic Secondhand
[ B skis ]
We received about 4" of heavy wet snow that at times came down like triple puff cotton balls. Pulled into the park and didn't see any evidence of grooming. After going inside to confirm they had no plans to groom we decided we couldn't ruin anything by getting out and breaking trail. We rolled on liquid glide wax to ensure we'd have no issues and headed out for the campground trail. Zero issues with sticking, caking or bottoming out. On the backside even had a nice slow downhill glide to the lake with a little double poling. If you want to get out for a little exercise follow our tracks to the campground trails. Even the grouse were out having fun in the new snow.

Only skied the easy loop around campground. Very hard and slippery. Saw no one out on skis. Many hikers the closer you get to visitor center. On the plus side, got to see an ore boat while standing in my skis. Not sure how upper trails are. If you have a sense of humor, it's an entertaining afternoon.

With the temps too warm at night to groom the snow is getting softer and it compresses into the track when you ski making your strides feel more like stepping. Check out the wolf (?) track photo to see how much you sink in. You have to get out to marker A6 to avoid the walkers even in the ski only trails. Still nice to be out in the fresh Lake Superior air!

Skied nearly everything. Pretty good, all things considered. Soft, slow, and a little punchy, but still pretty skiable. It'll be even better if given an opportunity to set up and freeze more. Lots of animal sign to enjoy. Still a lot of snow up here.

The rain this morning isn't helping things but there is still plenty of snow coverage and deep tracks. Not all trails on the few winter maps posted are marked but according to my guidebook we skied central fields loops and valley trails this morning. Fun to see all the big cat tracks!

Another amazing blue sky morning at Gooseberry! Once you get away from the chalet the tracks are in great shape. The best are up to fifth falls trail. The campground loop is also still holding up with the exception of the road crossings. With this snow depth I think we'll be skiing here for some time.

Excellent. Well groomed - tracks were solid. Bright blue sky and Lake Superior in the distance. River loop was particularly fun.

Skate loop survived all of the blowing and snowing quite nicely. Looked to have been groomed perhaps yesterday and hadn't seen any skiers yet. Some light snow this morning and a very small amount of debris, but overall flat, fast, and excellent skiing.

Skate loop was very nicely groomed, likely within the last couple days. I was there earlier in the week and it was fine, but the mid/late-week grooming session flattened both some footprints and a pronounced grooming ridge in the middle of the deck. Bravo, groomers.

Classic skied almost all trail segments this morning and everything was in very good condition. The trails north of Highway 61 were groomed and tracked over the weekend with just a little powder on top. The lower trail near the visitor center appeared to have been groomed on Monday. There were various animal tracks scattered throughout.
