With a 12:10 pm start, conditions were pretty good. It was right around 32 degrees and partly sunny. Lot less skier traffic now that Christmas vacation is over. The last Willow climb as well as Star's NW and west-east climbs still had a lot of sugar on them that I could not skate completely. Willow's downhill was reasonably fast but not as fast as when I was last out Saturday morning. The snow guns were out and I think ran last night next to the chalet. So maybe the bypass will be open in a few days.

Good conditions at Hyland this morning. The classic track was solid and the skate deck was pretty good at 6:30 am. Snow guns running everywhere!

Same loops as we are used to. Classic tracks were firm with a bit of sugar on the trail. Snow cannon running on the practice area of Star loop causing some slow snow into the corner. No less than five machines making snow at the start practice area off of Willow. And even more making snow out towards Frog Pond.

Hyland was essentially about 4 inches of powder covering up ice. Honestly all things considered, still great skiing and lots of people out. Thanks to the groomers and snowmaking crews that make it all possible!

Super sugary on the skate trail, especially on the Star trail - if you are going to skate I recommend just doing Willow. Classic tracks looked pretty good, just busy.

Got here at about 10:45 am, and the skate deck was already pretty sugary. Oddly felt fast in certain places but uphills were rough going. Skied a total of 27k and the sugar got progressively worse. Thankful to be able to ski at all with the winter we've had.

I classic skied at Hyland this morning. The tracks were good but the base was sugar. I had to work harder to get a good kick even on the flats. The hills required me to really pay attention to my technique. The skate deck looked to have a fair amount of sugar with the hills being deeper, maybe birkie wave 3. It was really nice to greet the new year on skis.

Hyland track was a bit loose at 3pm. I classique skied the course where the track varied from super soft to really nice and firm. I was disappointed by the skaters who were skating on the track. The trail is plenty wide for all. Thank you to the crew for working to provide a decent skiable option for the skiers.

The overnight snow turned the skating deck to mush, so it was tough but a good workout. Thank you to the groomers who've done such a great job under difficult circumstances.

At 9:15 am, the trail was in reasonably good shape - loose sugar on the climbs particularly the last one on Willow and the NW and west-east one on south end of Star but generally dry. Sugar was shallow and fast enough that even my 71-year-old self was able to completely skate every climb at least once in my two laps except the last one on Willow and the west-east one on the south end of Star. The Willow downhill continued to be fast and carried me consistently from the top to the turn past the timing shack with only a few strokes. It was 32 degrees and cloudy.
