Firsthand: Classic Secondhand
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
Tracks were in great when I started at 9:15 am. Very deep and a little icy but not bad. By 11 am they were getting soft in places but still pretty fast overall. Boulder up and down was great the entire time. Never icy going down and not too soft going up. TRPD announced a couple days ago last night would be the last grooming of the season so I was checking out the natural trails for crust skiing. They were rolled Saturday morning before the snow ended so there'll be a couple inches of soft or hard snow on top depending on the time of day but they didn't look too rutted today. Noticed also the shuttle parking lot was not plowed so I didn't try starting on the North trail.

They groomed overnight and set some nice tracks. Not too icy - Classic ski grip wax worked well. Skied the full trail loop.

Encountered downed trees, avoid the lake loop unless you have a helmet or a deathwish. Crashed thru this tree at the bottom of the hill on lake loop. If they groomed at all today you couldn't notice it by the time I got out there. Still happy to be out here in April!

Happy April fools. Apparently Hyland groomed at night, so it's all skied in trails but a beautiful photo opportunity on Frog Town Trail. The skis glided and kicked great but very washed out. I'm on my way to wirth.

The snowmaking loop was in good condition when I skied it in the window between the morning and afternoon rain. Obviously the trails were covered with high effort, slower wet corn. It took me 40% longer to skate one circuit. The uphills in the open were particularly saturated and slow but the more tree-covered portions of the trail skated reasonably well. I skated from the top of Scenic to the bottom of Boulder and from the top of Scenic to the first shelf on the Frog climb with relative ease. There was no snowplow wake issues on the Boulder downhill nor any build up of sugar on the Boulder çlimb. Saw four or five other skiers, two in the far parking lot - one who convinced me it was skiable and the second who convinced me to do Boulder because the downhill was not hairy. Glad I did given what little remains of the season.

Bless you groomers. Snowmaking loop was in excellent, fast condition. All of yesterday afternoon's soft snow ruts were gone; as was even the larger spot of ice towards the top of the climb on Willow connecting to Frog Town. Most of the loose snow was frozen corn with a few spots of drier, finer snow in the more shaded spots. Overhead things were just transitioning to full overcast so there was no wet corn. The sugar towards the top of the Boulder climb is a little deeper but still no problem for somebody like me who herringbones the upper portion of the climb.. No snowplow wake on the Boulder downhill. It was 28 degrees per Google at my 10:45 start.

Skied at 11:00 am. Temperature around 34. I was on skin skis and had really nice kick. Track was mostly shallow with an icy bottom, but well formed. I did not ski the Boulder Ridge segment. It was an excellent ski for how late I got out and the time of year. Thanks to the Hyland grooming crew for continuing the always good grooming! Thanks to all the grooming crews in the region for the great season!

Good conditions persevere on the snowmaking loop; tracks shallow in spots but with close attention and good footwork/weight control you can stay in them. Skied all except boulder ridge (took the cutoff) and had good grip on skins throughout, and blistering fast glide. How great to be skiing on March 30?
