Notes

With trails from beginners to expert and a very modern, heated trail center, Wild River State Park is one of the hidden gems for cross-country skiing in eastern Minnesota. The Aspen Knob loop is extremely challenging.

Used waxless classics on Pioneer Trail. Newly set track was a little soft in places, but should firm up. Occasional dirt where the groomer scalped a pocket gopher mound. The stretch through the Dry Creek ravine was gorgeous with snow still sticking to the pines. Lots of cars in the parking lot, but didn't encounter anyone (except deer) on the trail.

Skied the Midiwaki to the hill down to the river trail Nevers dam and then back on the Old Logging Trail. Tracks were set and the snow provided a great glide. No bare spots. Can't speak for the other trails but where I skied the conditions were excellent. Kudus to the groomer!

First ski this season on fresh tracks. Generally good conditions. A few places were a little soft--nothing that won't be solved with more skier traffic or additional grooming. I skied Mitigwaki, the Mondale River Trail going north, and the Old Logging Trail. A little evidence of people walking or snowshoeing where they shouldn't, but mostly people were staying on the right trails. Saw a pileated woodpecker, and 9 swans flying overhead near the river.

[ Good skis ]
Waxless classics on Mitigwaki, Old Logging, and River. A pair of good tracks on Old Logging, but others were hit and miss. Good coverage, but as reported before, poles can occasionally strike the underlying pavement. Hopefully track can be set after next snowfall! A pair of swans on the river by old dam site, and deer are hanging out again south of the road at the entrance.

Fresh snow was falling today. Beautiful ski! Base has been established but tracks have not been set. Decent skier made tracks on the Old Logging Trail. Skied that and Mitigwaki Trail. Not many people on the trails.

Got there fairly early in the morning and found that trails were rolled (not tracked) and almost no one had used them yet. Some trails were not groomed yet, but most of them were. They have plenty of snow on them, with almost no dirty spots. The couple spots we did see were easily skirted. The snow was great and the skiing was fantastic.

Wild River got as much snow as anywhere last Wednesday, and appears to have escaped the scouring winds for the most part. Coverage is very good. Skied down Pioneer, across the top of Deer Creek, up Mondale River Trail and down Old Logging. I was breaking trail through a consistent 6-8 inches of powder on Pioneer and Deer Creek. River, Old Logging and Mitigwaki were groomed. 2-3 inch base. No tracks were set yet, but my fishscales gripped just fine; glide was good too. The groomers were working on the Highland Hills loops. I detoured off Pioneer and took the.5 mile loop up and down the big hill. The deck was soft enough to keep my speed in my safe zone, but skaters should find it in good shape after it sets up. The Prairie loops were groomed as far as I could tell. I went down the little hill behind the trail center and had a look. The 1.2 mile is groomed for sure, but I can't vouch for the conditions on those more exposed trails. I'm saying B skis because there's just too much I don't know for sure. The groomed base on the Old Logging-River loop was good ski worthy except for one easily avoided 10 foot stretch of dirt.
