Trail Reports

2020-2021 season
Reports 1 to 10 of 66    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec | Oct

Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
Started at 10:30 am. Probably couldn't have picked a better time. Beautiful spring weather. Snow had varying levels of water content in different places. Refrozen snow skied well. Bare ice in spots where water had collected made control impossible. Bare spots keep growing larger. Despite the joy of being out, conditions had deteriorated to a point where I had decided the day would be my last of the season. Then my pole broke just to underscore the decision. I enjoyed skiing this year and I feel better for it but I must be on to other things. Thank you to all the fastidious groomers! I don't think you need to worry about damaging your skiis. All the bare spots have grass available but still, in my opinion, you gotta really want it to be out there.

Trail conditions on the old perimeter trail were poor. A skied-in topping of the latest minimal snowfall was atop a firmly packed or icy base. Narrow strips of ice connect near complete breaks in the snow cover on the downhills at 4e and 6e on Brown's Pond. Savanna had three complete snow cover breaks. Lake Elmo - 9e to 11e - and Prairie from 17E to the trail head were so far in good shape. It was 22 degrees and sunny. I used FastWax Salmon topped with Opti-Glide,.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Rock skis ]
Ski trails have been rolled and corduroy has been reported as well formed. Debris is present. Trails are in fair condition and there are icy and bare patches forming. Groomers reported slushy snow as well. These areas are avoidable.

Freshly groomed for skate skiing. Took the green and red trails. Areas are getting pretty thin, but 80-90% in good condition. Classic ski tracks are mostly decent, a couple of places will definitely remove any wax buildup on the bottom of your skis. Totally worth it to get out. Sunny and enjoyable.

Trail conditions are mostly soft and excellent but there are icy and bare patches to navigate around. Beware of two downhill pitches on the Brown Pond loop (south facing) that may appear covered but have rocks just underneath. Recommend taking skis off and walking down. Trails have been groomed for skate but not for classic. In fact some classic tracks have been groomed flat, maybe in hopes that they can reestablish them later.

Great fun this morning. On snow at 9:00, crusty but enough texture to get a good edge. If only glide was always so free. Some good crust skiing across lakes and fields, dodging the vegetation.

Trails were mostly in good conditions with a few icy spots. Areas where groomer went over were nice. Flats is in fair condition, otherwise I would say Savanna, Prairie, Hills, and Brown's Pond are in good condition. Was not able to get up to the North Loop.
