Notes

Some of the best trails in southern Minnesota. Tucked in the valley behind the school, the trails run around the northern slopes of the valley making them quite challenging and also well protected from the sun. Some lighted sections, and snowmaking operations.

Great conditions at SMU trails. Trails are rolled and packed although with the recent 4-5” of snow they’ll be soft. Track is set on all the trails but upper. Winter wonderland!

Groomed all trails this morning. Reset classic track where needed due to drifting. Skate deck has firmed up and is in top condition. Classic track is excellent. Great conditions overall.

Approx 4" new snow. Groomed/packed all trails and set classic track on many trails. Skate deck is very soft. Classic track is excellent. High winds overnight will probably cause drifting and could fill in some of the tracks. The trails are in the best condition we've had this year and should get better as the snow firms up.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
The trails have been well groomed and the 3-4 inch base has firmed up nicely. Watch for a couple of icey spots.
Good corduroy this morning which was a real treat to ski on.
The trail is at the end of St John's road, but the exit to get St. John's road off of Hwy 14 is closed with a gate. So if you have a GPS, drive past St John's road and let the GPS reroute you to drive through the college campus to access the trail road.
Time to get that on snow Birkie training in!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
We received 3-4" of snow with high moisture content. The snow has been rolled/packed on all trails. However, the base under this snow is solid ice. The new snow should bond to the ice but it will take colder overnight temps. Skate skiers may "kick out" in many areas. We did not set a classic track. Overall the entire system is in pretty good condition but caution on downhills is advised. The Yons parking lot is very icy, use caution where you park and walking to the trail.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Partial, Rock skis ]
This morning we attempted to groom, with minimal success. The trails are extremely icy over the entire system. There are very few segments without ice that we can make moderately good. If anyone chooses to ski, extreme caution is recommended.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Groomed all trails this morning and set track. We got +/- 2" of snow over a slushy mess. The base is very firm and icy is some areas. We packed the new snow and it will skate well. The track is fair to marginal but there is a track on the main loop and smaller trails. Overall with the limited snow we received the trails are in good condition.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Most, Rock skis ]
The trails were in good condition Sunday morning but as the day progressed, the 45 degree weather didn't fare well with the trails as the snow became a bit sloppy. I stuck to the 5k loop which developed quite a few bare spots that would concern anyone skiing on a nice pair of skis. There were also quite a few stretches with small sticks and leaves on the trail that could damage a ski base. I would not recommend skiing on nice skis but if you have a pair of rock skis it is doable as long as you ski in the morning or early afternoon before the sun scorches the trails.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
We groomed all trails today and they are still holding up pretty good. Thin spots are easily avoided. Track was set a few days ago and it is not bad but only small portions are set. We plan to be grooming Saturday and Sunday morning. Early skiing will be best with the warm afternoons.

Groomed main 5 K loop for skating only. Snow conditions are very firm, some sticks and some bumpy areas. Overall the trails are in very good condition. Set classic track in Yons and trails adjacent to Yons. Snow depth not sufficient in most areas to set track.
