Trail Reports

2018-2019 season
Reports 1 to 10 of 41    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec
Saturday, March 16, 2019
Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
Most of the trails were groomed, but the skate lane was still a bit rough and icy in spots this morning. Definitely skiable though. Classical tracks are in good shape, and when doing some double poling seemed fast. Finished up around noon and temperatures were coming up, so parts of sun-exposed sections were getting moist.

Firsthand: Both
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
Checked out the trails after the rain and melt down. No standing water or iced sections and at least a foot of base everywhere. The groomer was heading out as I left today. Should be great skiing this weekend.

Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
Short cuts, Deep Woods, and some of Whispering Pines are open. The short cuts are tracked. The classic track has set up nicely and skied great. The skate lane was still soft on the edges. some work had been done on the sections that still needed to be groomed.

[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Moist but firm skate deck mostly with some softer, hollow spots (drifts). Classical tracks are in very good shape. After long hiatus (work interfering with fun), I finally got on the trails. Plenty of corduroy as they've apparently seen little traffic recently. Sometimes reasonably fast skating, sometimes pretty slow but admittedly I was waxed too cold. Not sure whether it was me (probably) or conditions, I was tired after an hour and change skiing.

Trails were being groomed while I was skiing. Fresh, cold, slow snow. Trails were very nice. Should be set up good for tomorrow.

The good news is that grooming was in progress at we left this afternoon, around 4:00. The bad news (for us) was grooming was in progress... we missed it, bad timing. We skied in 2+ inches of new powder over a relatively firm base. Pretty slow. Classical tracks were skied-in in places. The newly groomed skate deck - all 0.5 km that we hit returning to the car - was better, but still soft and needs to set up. significant drifting in places, so expect some of the deck to be hollow. Beautiful day to be out!

When I arrived, the trails were covered with about 2 inches of new moist powder. Skate deck underneath was firm and conditions were fairly fast. Classical tracks could be seen, but partially filled in. As I was finishing up (11:30) grooming was in progress. My last 2 km were on the newly groomed skate lane and this was slower, being somewhat softer and needing to set-up. Double-poling in the tracks seemed faster. Plenty of snow here; barring any extended warm-up we should be skiing well into March.

Recently groomed with apparently little post-grooming traffic. Skate deck is firm and pretty fast given the 12F temperature this afternoon. Skiing partner, going easy in advance of the Birkie was doing classical and reported similar conditions for the tracks. Nice, low key skiing today, unfortunately didn't have much time to take advantage of really good condition.

Trails firmed-up overnight. There remain a few soft spots, again where drifting occurs. Skate deck is rutted and a tad rough where there was lighter traffic yesterday owing to the softness. Sections that saw heavier traffic and perhaps more passes when groomed are smoother. Classical tracks look terrific. I skied from 10:30 to noon.

Arrived this morning to newly groomed trails. Firmness of the skate deck was variable, from moderately firm to soft. On average probably toward the firmer side as the soft spots correspond to areas prone to drifting. Generally my skate marks were in about an inch. I did not ski much of the trail system, only doing repeats on a few sections. Paul was out grooming again as I was almost finished. Classical tracks looked great, and skied fine when I was in them double poling, not super fast though.
