Trail Detail
Notes
About 17km total of trail loops near the St. Cloud penitentiary. Some scenic woods and great hills. Just a mile from the Mississippi, trails run on land that was formerly a farm and takes skiers through pastures, forests, and apple orchards. Trails are mostly easy to intermediate with a few challenging hills.Trail Reports

Went out this afternoon with low expectations at 38° and bright sun. Despite warm wax and structure, I skied in slow soft suction snow. Orchard and hilltop and north loop are actually in good condition with almost full coverage and flat skate deck- just very soft in the warm weather. Early morning would be better conditions during a warm spell. Lots of tree debris on north loop.

The drifted areas from last week have been groomed down into ski-able trail. Still some icy patches in the open, and lots of sticks from the trees. Warmup loop is good, orchard loop is okay, but hilltop loop is in really good shape- except 301climb is ice and is necessary to walk up. Classic track looked rough: maybe 1/3 ice, 1/3 drifted in track, and 1/3 okay track.

Mixed conditions today. Orchard loop had a fresh groom, and the actual orchard part of the trail was in great shape. The south part of orchard loop had either ice or soft drifts, but was carefully ski-able. Baltos and the meadow part of hilltop and warmup loop was ungroomed ice or deep drifts and no good. Hilltop in the woods was not groomed but had 1.5" powder from Saturday and skied slow but pretty well for hill repeats. 301 climb was glare ice and exposed gravel. The 3k jail trail loop was the best conditions today except for one area with a ton of fallen pinecones.

Skied after dark hoping the snow would be a little more firm. Orchard, hilltop loops have a good deck with usual thin spots on sun/wind-exposed southern orchard trail. Conditions in the woods were fantastic. I grounded once in the gravel at the bottom of 301 climb. Baltos loop has grass and exposed ground at points, but was 95% covered. Trail could really use a fresh snowfall to be confident keeping good skis off the ground.

Great skiing today at Greystone! Newly rolled, and the classic track looked pretty solid as well. Please note for parking: there is a new lot off 20th Avenue SE by the water tower. Cross the street, and you will then see the ski trail that links into the regular trail system. Watch for the blue parking signs on Minnesota Boulevard.

Skated Orchard, Hilltop and Warm Up loops. Good coverage on all three. Note that parking for the trails south of the prison has been moved from the barn to near the water tower on 20th Ave SE. The new trail from the parking lot (cross 20th Ave to access) is a bit rough but once you get to the Orchard loop it's much better.

Three skiers out by headlamp tonight. Parking is plowed. Good coverage and fresh corduroy on orchard and hill loops. The deck was still a bit soft.
