Evening
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
The trails were groomed yesterday. The snow today was soft and partially transformed. I stayed in the classic track on klister the whole way. It was slow and a little soft, but I never sunk in. The skate lane looked great, and there weren't any deep ruts in it, so it should be good in the morning. Thank you groomers.

Evening
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Rock skis ]
Very icy with big ruts on the trails. The new snow in the evening made it difficult to see the ruts making for an adventurous ski. Classic tracks were ok in some areas but mostly non-existent due to melting. There are two sink holes on the about 3.5km into the 10km loop so use caution. The Magney connector was freshly groomed.

We classic skied the campground and 3k today at Upper Spirit around 11:30. The skate deck was pretty icy in the shady spots and nice when it wasn't shady. The classic tracks are really firm and deep. They were a mix of ice and slower than ice... pole plants firm, no debris at all. The tracks seemed to be out a bit further than in the past in some places making a narrower skate lane. There was also a "berm" on the left side of the skate lane for awhile. Still great to be skiing on fairly fresh grooming!

Trails were perfectly groomed this morning about 10 am. Both skate and classic. Looks like everything was groomed (all intermediate and advanced trails), not sure about the campground trails. Skate deck was getting soft, and getting ruts from skiers. Classic track looked perfect. When groomed, Upper Spirit is spectacular!

The trails were groomed today at Spirit. They were great, very deep tracks, and a firm deck throughout. The connector was not groomed today, but skied fine, Magney Loop was also groomed today, for classic and skate. Thank you groomers.

Skied the entire Upper system. Despite a solid base throughout, the 5K/10K and Campground loop had sections of extensive drifting - Mother Nature has undone some of the nice grooming efforts. Although we were skating we noticed that sometimes the classic tracks were even filled in. The 5K/10K was not groomed very wide, so that V2/skating without poles in the flat/downhill sections put you right over the classic tracks. The situation was exacerbated when the trail was narrowed by drifting snow. Even deep in the woods, a fresh layer of less than an inch of snow over the groomed snow was pretty slow because it was windblown and not fluffy. Not many skiers have gone over it. The last K of the 10K and the campground trail is disrupted by snow machines for a good reason - Search & Rescue training. Skiable yet, but awkward. 3K is in pretty good shape and groomed wider.

Can I just write in epic and leave at that? It appears that grooming occurred late yesterday afternoon as I found nothing but perfect, set corduroy. My only improvement would be for work to not get in the way of doing another loop. Tracks were not set as of this morning, but amazing for skate especially on a bluebird day.

Firsthand: Classic Secondhand

25F. Super sunny. Eight inches fresh snow. The groomer was just finishing as I was finishing. The entire system has been rolled. No tracks had been set. Grooming plans: Upper Spirit will be closed Friday for race day grooming. The entire system will be double tracked best line. This will remain until Monday or Tuesday so don’t plan to skate at Upper Spirit until after Tuesday.

13 F. Sunny, light breeze. The grooming in the campground loop is a bit odd, not the usual. - double track around the buildings and reitlers loop, cut off at reitlers not groomed at all. Surface is good, though. There is a seam in the skate deck in most of the 5km and 10km trail. The left side of the skate deck is often softer than the rest of the deck and classic track. The classic track is set great if you're classic skiing, but if you're skating it is hard not to ski into and over the classic tracks. As of about two weeks ago Larry Mishkar is no longer the groomer at upper or lower Spirit.
