Firsthand: Classic

Well the snow is getting pretty skinny out there. I skied from noon to 2 today. Temps were in the low 50's. I skied Fern Dell and Hastings. Fern Dell definitely had more snow on it especially the first half. If I was gonna ski there tomorrow morning I would likely just do laps on the first half of Fern Dell. Snow was melting quick. Did not see one skier today though there were some fresh tracks.

I skied the Hastings loop. It was getting warm and sticky in sunny spots and still a bit more solid in the shade. Getting thin in some sunny areas. Grooming is as good as can be with so little snow but in narrow or areas that have turns it's a bit scary to maneuver. Thankful for the rolling so there are a few more days of skiing!

A nice ski on rolled trails this morning! I skated, and the snow was thin, but not much breaks through yet. Some roots do poke through. Some of the trails are open near the campground, and others are not rolled.

Wow ... that was beautiful. There was about 3" of snow on the trails that had been rolled to a nice 1 1/2" thickness or so. Soft snow and really good coverage. No real bare spots. A bit of litter on trail but not much. No one else had skied today as the dusting that happened last night at Mirror Lake had not been touched. A few folks skied yesterday after the trail was rolled. Mainly skaters who looked like they had really good conditions to skate on. I classic stride and there were no tracks laid down as there was not enough snow but it was joyful to ski on sweet snow only an hour from Madison. No icy base at all and no side slippage. I would highly recommend skiing there very soon. I skied Fern Dell trail and a bit onto other trails that had not been rolled. It was real sweet skiing in the unrolled snow too.

We got in a two hour skate ski from noon to 2:00 afternoon. The 1" snow early this week has not been groomed nor hit very hard by skiers. This is good, as it is skating much better than before, and it appears classic improved as well. We skied Fern Dell, Hastings, Pioneer, Killborn (campground) and Newport (beach) loops. All had rock skis/thin sections but also quite a bit of enjoyable skating. Still no tracks (need more snow for that). We live pretty close, so very glad we skied there today. A friend skied Turtleville and said two problem spots but otherwise good enough that he skied three laps on it along with Fern Dell.

Half inch of new snow greatly improved the skate deck, smooth and fast in this warmer weather. No classic tracks, still too thin. Watch out for hazards, roots sticks dirt, lurking just beneath the new snow.

Skied Fern Dell trail. There were several areas with tree debris but over all the snow coverage was good. No classic tracks are set but I did talk with two people skiing classic and they were enjoying the warmer weather.

I skied Fern Dell, Turtleville, and Hastings/Pioneer trails. I would estimate there is only about five inches of snow on the ground here so there is not much for the groomers to work with. There is not enough snow to set a classic track. The trails are skiable for skate skiing but there are many shallow areas with exposed dirt and many areas with lots of forest debris. There was recent logging on Turtleville, I skied 13.5 kilometers with no damage to my good skis but I would recommend B skis if you are concerned about possible damage. The 10 degree temperature slowed things down considerably allowing for good control through problem areas.

Zero degrees, overcast, light winds. Skied Ishnala and all trails east of the lake. Very thin with leaves and sticks. That said very skiable. Kudos to the groomers for creating a smooth flat surface. Not enough snow for classic tracks.

The park staff have been rolling and combing the past couple of days the numerous 1" snowfalls we have received. All trails except for Northwest loops have been at least rolled and most now have corduroy as well. Not enough base depth to set tracks and a fair amount of debris in places. We had a very enjoyable skate ski mid day on Fern Dell, Turtleville, Newport, Kilborn, Ishnalla, Pioneer and inner Hastings. Hit something on Ishnalla the nicked the edge of our rock skis but that was it as far as any damage. Turtleville was skiable but not nearly as nice as the other trails.
