Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Trails are all freshly groomed again as of this morning. Quite a bit of wind the last few days but 1.5 inches of new snow last night allowed for us to cover up any debris. It looks to be a little breezy again this coming week (up to 20 mph gusts) but that shouldn’t be very noticeable in the woods with the tree cover; we do not expect much for snow drifting on ski trails other than the lake crossings. Excellent conditions right now! Beautiful skate deck and classic tracks! Just need to throw on an extra layer this week!

I started at Bearskin Lodge, crossing the lake. There was a good track and skate deck, though windy it was mostly clear. No slush or crusted icey, old water. It was 8° when I started. I skied the Oxcart Loop, then crossed the Gunflint Trail and did the whole Polar Creek Loop. All were freshly groomed and the classic track was great. I had a great glide and kick with Swix special green- 12°-21°. Some fluffy snow was falling off pines, but in spite of being very windy, I did not encounter any drifting.

Beautiful conditions! Skied the Poplar Creek loop and met the groomer on the way back in (about 1 pm). Firm tracks, great coverage.

Skied classic out of Bearskin late morning early afternoon in absolutely perfect conditions. Classic tracks were in pristine shape and skate decks had hardly been touched.

Wrapped up a week of skiing on the Central Gunflint Trails. We visit around New Year’s every year and this year we had the most snow we’ve seem in a dozen-plus years. Trails were in fantastic shape for classic skiing but, with the new snow and cold temps, skate deck probably a little soft for skate skiing.

After 9 inches of fresh snow on Monday, plus nearly another 4 on Tuesday, we’re looking at excellent trail conditions. The few trails that previously had rocks poking through are now nicely covered. The skate deck is firm, and classic tracks set well. North/South Link is now groomed with skate and classic lanes, apart from the Flour Lake section which is still a skate lane only. All lake crossings are solid and free of slush.
