Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Rock skis ]
The freeze-thaw cycles have left a base that varies between extremely hard-packed snow and sheer ice. The one inch of snow that we had last night has been skied-into this base and this makes for a ski-able track over most of the course; however, I found the track to be very slow. There are some places where the track turns to sheer ice and it is necessary to either ski around these or double pole to be safe. Over much of the park, other skiers have reinforced what is left of the classic track and it looked like the classic skiing might actually be fairly decent.

[ Trails Open: All, Rock skis ]
The condition of the trail is not as good today as yesterday, due the warming conditions, but it is still very ski-able, particularly with freestyle technique. The classic track has taken the biggest hit. The skate track is still in mostly good condition, with good to excellent coverage, but there are some relatively short sections where the trail is extremely hard or icy and extreme caution/double polling is recommended (this is particularly true on the trails closest to the Nature Center). There are also some places where there are some puddles. The puddles do not present a major problem at present, but could turn to rock-hard ice if the temperature gets below freezing. It was still great fun to get out for what may be one of the last days of my 2020-2021 ski season.

[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
There is still some good skiing to be had, despite the warming conditions! I was out on the trails by about 9:30 a.m. and skied until a little past noon. The trails were in great shape but they did change as the day warmed. Initially, the trails were pretty fast and hard, but with enough texture on the snow to allow the skis to track well. From my perspective, at least, conditions improved as the day warmed and the snow softened a little. Coverage is still excellent. The classic track was a bit worn down from all of the skiing and warming conditions, but was still mostly in very good shape, with no bare spots at all.

Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Two days of warm temperatures are definitely taking their toll. I'm going to sadly sit out and wait for more snow, but the trails are still open. The base is starting to show in areas with some of the melting. Conditions are fine and the grooming is top notch, but I don't have enough waxes in my arsenal. We need more snow!

Quarry Hill had been groomed since Sunday's snowfall. I skate skied, trails are a bit soft but still able to generate plenty of glide. Faster than expected. Tracks looked fantastic as well, lots of classic skiers moving right along. Pristine conditions for now.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
I started from Quarry Hill West Park (long parking lot overlooking two ball fields west of the Nature Center by maybe 1/2 mile) where conditions were great. The connector route that runs south-southeast has bits of debris here and there (along with foot traffic on the track/skate deck) so maybe not your finest skis, but good skis are fine for the conditions. Very well groomed. Always a joy to ski while it's snowing.

Quarry Hill Park currently offers outstanding skiing on beautifully groomed classic tracks and skate trails throughout the park. About 90% of the classic track and the skate track are very fast. The track is a little slower due to snow blown onto the track on the more exposed loop near the main entrance to the park (visible from East Circle Drive) and on the exposed loop around the baseball diamond on the West side of the park (near 9th Street NE); however, even these loops are still very fun to ski.

It was a good afternoon to freestyle ski in the woods today at Quarry Hill. The woods at Quarry Hill provide a significant amount of protection from the wind in these bitterly cold conditions. The skate track is in excellent condition. I also classic skied yesterday, right after the groomer had refreshed both the freestyle and classic tracks. The classic track is also in excellent condition.

Despite the extreme cold, exacerbated by the wind, I thoroughly enjoyed skiing in the beautiful sunshine at Quarry Hill today and never had a problem with frostbite, even on the small part of my face that was not covered. The wind is coming from the north to northwest today. The woods on the east side of the park offer substantial protection from the wind. If you do ski the meadow between the Nature Center and the Prairie House, I strongly recommend that you do so moving south, in the direction of the Nature Center and main parking area, as this will put the wind behind you and make your skiing both more enjoyable and safer. Stay in the woods as much as possible while heading into the wind. The cross country track is in very good condition. It was a little slow at first due to the cold conditions and the light dusting of snow from last night that partially filled the track. Once I had skied-in the track, glide was much better, but still a little slower than it would be on a warmer day. On the few occasions when I stepped out onto the skate track, it felt very slow. I think that I am going to mostly stick with classic technique until we get warmer conditions.

After skiing the classic track yesterday, I skied the freestyle track today. Both tracks are in excellent condition. The central part of the freestyle track, where it has been packed firm by prior skiers, is reasonably fast, even in this cold weather. Overall, conditions are delightful for either technique.
