Trail Reports

2022-2023 season
Reports 1 to 10 of 34    Month: Apr | Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec
Saturday, April 8, 2023
Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Soft and slow, particularly in full sun exposure areas at 40 degrees. Predictable with fish-scale base skis. No catch in the glide. Loads of snow in most areas, shaded bridges over creek have 1 1/2 feet of compacted snow on them yet.

Great conditions this morning, had a wonderful time. Lots of wildlife and great trails. Thanks for grooming! How wonderful to be able to ski Easter weekend!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
Just groomed all the trails. The top of alpine is a bit thin but otherwise things are looking really good for April. Was not able to set track to full depth in all areas but snow quality and coverage is really good. Just ski!

Pit Run looked in good shape with no foot traffic helping keep it that way. It was left alone. Skier report concurred that assessment. All other trails were groomed again today. Same skier claimed very good skiing conditions a few hours after I set the tracks. We'll continue to groom as long as there is skiable snow. As long as it gets below freezing in the evenings, we can rake it, comb it, flatten it and provide tracked skiing. Dewpoint, humidity, daytime temperatures, clouds or no clouds and a few other factors get tossed into the equation. The base is holding up well, which plays into the bonus of Spring skiing. As Jay at The Lag says ~ Just Ski!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
All trails were groomed today. Skin skis, fish scale skis or wax skis with a little warmer wax and or an elongated wax pocket should provide excellent skiing. Alpine is a bit sketchy on top, but the chance to see the large herd of deer that greeted me as I went past will make up for the detours to avoid a few grassy spots. Looks like we should still be skiing for awhile!

Trails not recently groomed but still enjoyable. Classic skiing only. About 5 miles of trail. Plenty of snowpack for now.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
All trails were groomed this afternoon. The conditions are as good as they can be on all loops. Whitetail Run Golf Course has a dedicated skate deck that has been provided in coordination with the golf course and a very community minded family. The WDC Nordic team used it extensively for training purposes and has a very solid deck. It was groomed last evening with a wide Ginzu, leaving a well textured flat skating surface. Give it a try (park in the clubhouse parking lot). It's open to the public. It looks like we could have many more weeks of skiing at Black's!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
All trails were groomed today. Tracks should set up nicely overnight. The trail on top of Alpine seems to have been adopted by the deer; please cut them some slack, as reading isn't required to be a deer. With the snow depth in the woods getting deeper, they are increasingly using the ski trails to move. Pit Run is in as good condition as Pit Run gets, the downhills have been brushed back, the trails packed and flattened -- it's old style skiing as good as it gets.
