Evening
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Skied the man made GANC loops for about an hour and half in the evening as the temperatures were starting to fall. The stadium gave a false sense of insecurity as it was getting very glazed and icy, but as you went into the woods it wasn't quite as bad. Flats had some icier spots where your ski would occasionally slip out but there was generally a well chopped up line around the corners that allowed you to get an edge with fairly decent luck. I attempted to classic at first with the warmest hard wax I had but it wasn't working too well and tracks were very glazed - probably would have needed klister to have a successful classic ski so I switched to skate. There were some odd little dirty patches that were easy to see ahead of time but unexpected given the fact that there is multiple feet of man-made base on these trails, so just be on the lookout for those. One loop of the "Lone Wolf" natural snow loop showed quite a number of dirty spots and B skis would be needed there.

Excellent conditions at Lower Spirit trails, deep track, skate deck was firm but not icy. All of the system appeared to be recently groomed.

Lower Spirit snowmaking loops are fantastic today. Freshly groomed, deep tracks and holding up well to the warmth. Connector trail to the upper Nordic and the natural snow loops are skiable with a few brown patches. A little fresh snow will go a long way. Props to the spirit grooming crew!

[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Skied this afternoon the 3.3k nordic trails at the base of Spirit Mountain. The stadium was quite icy, but the upper loops were decent. It looked like the groomer did one pass on the trail system. The extra natural snow loops were dirty with some gravel, so don't use your best skis on those sections. Thanks to the groomers for making a reliably skiable option even in adverse weather conditions!

The lower loops had minor debris, but a clean groomed skate deck. Some turns and downhills slightly icier than I would have liked, but I'm timid. Upper loops had major debris, including rocks, and near bare patches, but were navigable. Rock skis only. Overall a beautiful day on the snow.

28F. Overcast and windy, then sunny. The tracks are in pretty good shape all around. Some places they're shallow, and some places they're practically in the middle of the skate deck, but everything is looking really nice. I didn't ski the connector, but I did ski on the part of the trail system that doesn't have machine made snow. You have to be careful because there's a lot of rocks and such, but it's a really nice stretch. Can't wait for more natural snow.

The artificial snow sections are in great shape and well-groomed. Other sections have a fair amount of dirt and occasional gravel poking through, but ski-able. The upper Spirit connector is groomed, but like 40% dirt and gravel, and I wouldn't recommend it until we've gotten more snow. Still, it is so cool to have that trail completed. Finally realizing the dream of the GANC being the gateway to all those great western trails.

Snow is in great shape at Spirit. Might be the best option in town. Man made base + fresh snow means the parts closer to the stadium were pretty great. The more westerly trails hadn't been groomed today but the fresh fluff on top meant they were still fun. Occasional grass/leaf sticking thru up there. Skied on B skis but only because my good skis still have storage wax on them. Parking lot is an ice rink though.

Observation
I saw the groomer putting the first fresh corduroy of the season down on the connector between upper and lower Spirit this morning. No classic tracks could be seen.

24 F. As of 1 PM the Grand Avenue system had one-groomer width, including classic track and the stadium, after yesterday's warmup. The classic track is in phenomenal shape. I think the groomer headed up the connector.
