Actually patches of snow at Hyland, including south - facing Boulder Ridge downhill. Found Manzella ski glove - gave it to a Park Cop.

I was hoping to get another day of skiing in after the recent colder temperatures, but the trails looked too rough to even try. I walked a bit on them hoping that they got better, but gave up. I didn't check the whole trail, so maybe there was a good section still. I ended up walking other trails for a bit, and when I was leaving one other skier had just arrived and was going to try the trails. I don't know if he had better luck or not.

The Glide Appreciation section of the trail has been expanded since yesterday; now it's more than a couple steps to get back onto snow. Besides that, the trails were still pretty good. They were even a little icy when I first got there, but quickly softened up to give about an hour of good skiing before it got to be a bit slow going. Of course, the skiing isn't the same as in the middle of the winter, but if you just enjoy the weather and the fact that you're still skiing it's still fun. Today's trail sightings: a few other skiers and two snowshoers.

I wasn't expecting much after yesterday, but the cold temperatures overnight had frozen the snow. When I first got there around 9:00, the trails were icy, bumpy, and fast. The downhills were exciting, to say the least. After an hour or so the snow started to warm up and it was actually pretty good skiing. Some parts of the trails are better skied in the opposite direction to avoid bumpy downhills. I saw a couple deer and a couple other skiers. Overall it was good skiing today and beautiful weather.

If you set your expectations low enough you can still enjoy skiing. The rain yesterday made the trails a bit worse, they were pretty bumpy and on the slow side. There was a spot where you have to take a step or two in the grass, but those few steps really make you appreciate how well your skis glide even on wet snow. The uphills were still in pretty good shape overall; the downhills were a bit exciting sometimes with the bumps. Interesting skiing.

Surprisingly there were some skiiable trails. There were just enough open to do about a 3–4 km loop. It was a bit slow and a bit dirty with a few spots to avoid. Uphills were better than they usually are in the winter, pretty firm and none of that loose, deep snow.

Surprisingly good conditions all things considered. Expect some settled dirt and leaves that have collected on the surface from the entire winter and are just showing now because the snow is melting. Start at Jan's Place. The chalet loop is in really bad shape. Except for a couple spots all is skiable. On one of the downhills snow coverage is down to about a foot wide, it's the hill after Boulder ridge (?).

Man made snow. Start of Star loop is very leafy. Tough to ski on. However, everywhere else (Frog town, Willow Creek, scenic Foothills, and Boulder ridge) is decent. I was skiing like normal out there. Occasionally you have to dodge dirt or leaves though so that slows the pace down a bit (not much though). I was surprised at how good it was. 8 o clock to 9 o clock at night, 43 degrees Fahrenheit.

Snowmaking loop to and from top of Scenic Foothills was in poor condition. It was 37 degrees and cloudy. Used FastWax Yellow LF buffed w. fluoro paste. It was not worth skating. I should have probably done classic. Track was still there. I moved at little more than half my pace, 3.8 mph, of just two days ago. Could not sustain a skate on a saturated base with maybe an 1 1/2 inches of new snow on top. Could just barely maintain momentum going downhill. Best that can be said was rutting wasn't a problem because snow was too soft and sudden deacclerations was also not a problem because never got going that fast.

At 10:30 and maybe my last skate of the year, the snowmaking loop was in very good condition. It was 37 degrees and sunny. I used FastWax Yellow buffed with fluoro paste. While the uphills were getting pretty deep with sugar with my mid-morning start, I was still able to sustain skating (barely) up all uphills except Boulder. A stiff southeast wind and snow conditions kept me from being able to sustain a glide all the way from the top of the hill after the right angle, uphill turn on Frog Town. Nevertheless, I was still able to clock my fourth fastest pace of the season. Not a bad way to end a great year of skiing.
