Notes

Trails are on the golf course. Some nice hills but most of the course is pretty exposed. There is one back leg that is quite shaded and seems to hold snow long after the rest of the course loses it. Rentals at the chalet.

Como is still rocking with the warmer weather and lack of continual snow. The groomer have set a bit of tracks for the learning area. Otherwise, the skate deck was pretty solid throughout the whole course, a bit icy in a few places and a bit thin in a few places. Nothing to worry about if you're paying attention but I would ski on B skis (if you have them). In high traffic south facing areas, there is definitely grass, sometimes lots, but that's to be expected. Still great to have up in Saint Paul. 7 or 8 out of 10.

Snow in good condition, somewhat compact. A few little patches of grass poking through thin snow are easy to avoid.

A few grass patches but overall really nice. Some of the hills were quite icy so if you’re a beginner be careful. I had no idea it was such a big loop! Beautiful day.

Skied over lunch and the grooming done by James in the morning was appreciated! Cold snow made for slow going, but the deck was firm, level, and really great. A few grassy spots here and there trying to make their way through, but all in all, very nice. Thanks groomers!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
The trail at Como golf course was groomed this morning. The classic tracks were not groomed to help preserve them but the skate deck received a complete groom. The trail looks great. Enjoy the corduroy!

When it comes to rating ski trails, I have a tendency to think they're terrible when I first arrive, but to upgrade my impressions as I regain my ski legs. Such it was at Como this afternoon. Although the section north of the trolley track at first seemed excessively thin and hardpacked, with too many patches where grass poked through, by the end of my ski I decided that they really weren't that bad. Nowhere was it icy or so hard packed I couldn't get an edge. Because of the previously-noted problems under the bridge, I initially confined my loops to the north side. (I had intended to take a shovel to repair the problem, but spaced out.) Although other skiers were slipping through under the bridge on a two foot wide strip of ok snow on the right of the churned up section, I didn't want to risk my skis, which are almost new, and my only pair of skate skis. But I ended my ski with an equal number of loops on the south side, where I found perfect coverage and conditions I would rate as excellent. On the far south side the trail has been groomed further up the hill, closer to the zoo, than in recent years, which I think is an improvement. Thanks groomers!

A great way to kick off the new year, with the local course open and moving. The entire course was open with good coverage, however, be extra careful under the big stone bridge, it's dirty and nasty under there... like it always gets. Surprisingly pleasant day to skate considering the cold weather (0F). Trail was covered easily everywhere but the skate deck had firmed up too much with the artic temps. Bits of icy track on high traffic areas and turns. It was hard to get a bite at first but I was able to get moving. Definitely should've set up colder wax, Swix Blue PS6 was too soft. The arctic snow just stopped me dead. Still got in 16k though.

Skate deck very compacted and firm, not icy yet. No official classic tracks, but many "social" classic tracks. If you are comfortable skiing without tracks in places, you will be fine. I would have skated had I known how sporadic the classic tracks were.
