Notes

Some of the best trails in southern Minnesota. Tucked in the valley behind the school, the trails run around the northern slopes of the valley making them quite challenging and also well protected from the sun. Some lighted sections, and snowmaking operations.

Trail Reports

2020-2021 season
Reports 11 to 20 of 22    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec
Sunday, January 31, 2021
Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
3-4" new snow overnight. Trails were rolled in the morning and classic track set on most trails. I classic skied after I set the tracks mid afternoon. The trails had been heavily skied but were holding up well. There are small areas where the track setter hit dirt. These areas are scattered throughout the system and were not a problem today. More work will be done to cover these areas during the warm up.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
The skate deck was lightly groomed this morning/early afternoon on most trails, lower and upper. Thin areas are beginning to show in several areas, the base is firm but fairly shallow so rocks on Rattlesnake and Upper trail are a possibility. The classic tracks were not reset. Overall the skate deck is in good condition, classic tracks marginal to poor in many areas.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
The new snow on Sunday has improved conditions. We groomed the entire trail system this morning. The skate deck is in very good to excellent condition with some thin base areas in isolated areas. Classic track was set this morning with moderate success. The tracks are shallow in many areas but clean (no leaves). Overall skiing on the lower trails is very good. The upper trails are very skiable but skiers should be aware of rocks in some areas.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Partial, B skis ]
Groomed the man made loop this morning after a light dusting of new snow. The man made loop is very good and good skis are ok. We also continued to build base on the 5 K loop but it is still very thin and only recommend to use your best rock skis. The classic track is poor to non existent. The skate deck on the man made snow is firm and very fast. We will attempt to set classic track after the temps warm.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Partial, Rock skis ]
We scratched up the manmade loop which you could use your good skis. Then we went over the 5 K, up to second cutoff and around to Brother John's and back across the sledding hill. It's skiable but you'll need rock skis and it is very thin. We groomed the lighted trail and down Cow Path, which again rock ski conditions. Track is set in Yon's bowl and through the manmade loop. You can find some inner loops off the manmade, I think 4-5K worth including manmade.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Partial, Rock skis ]
We got somewhere around 3+/- inches of heavy, wet snow last night. All the lower trails were packed with our rollers. The snow we received is on zero base and the depth varies from almost nothing to 3" before we packed. Any trail outside the manmade snow loops are ski at your own risk and definitely use rock skis! The manmade loops are in excellent condition and good skis can be used. We attempted to set track on the main loop and all trails with manmade snow . River Trail is in very poor condition and not recommended for skiing. We did not roll Rattlesnake or upper trails. The forecasted temp near term should harden this snow for better conditions and we will try to improve what we have. Use caution and be safe.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Partial, B skis ]
Our snowmaking loop is holding up well. We've been able to add snow to thin spots and made snow the last couple mornings. It's a loop trail with some good climbs and some rolling with about 1.3 K . Track is set but less than par. Access is from Yon's valley which is all the way through campus , please be aware of speed limits. All other trails are closed for lack of snow.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Partial, B skis ]
We harvested clean snow from a parking lot at SMU and filled in all bare/icy/thin spots on our man made loop. We attempted to set a classic track with marginal success. The loop is in good condition with no bare spots or ice. We will continue to keep the 1+K in good skate skiing condition. All other trails at SMU are not open.

It's not much but the man made snow loop is good. No significant risk of damage as long as you stay on the 1K loop. Get out on the trail. They have lights too!
