Trail Detail
Notes
The Balsam Branch trails are open to the public for no charge. When there is snow, tracks are set by Polk County Park and volunteers. The trailhead parking area is always well plowed. Toilet facilities are available at the nearby Kennedy Environmental center but no coffee shop or warming facility. Roughly 4K of lighted trails added in 2010.Trail Reports

Not ski-able trails, but grab some Yak Traks, and poles, and do some very fun trail running-bounding. Double pole up the hills for a nice workout. The snow shoe trails are icy, but it's fine to run on the ski trails with a firm deck and a fine layer of snow on top. Almost bare ground in some spots, so you get to crunch through some snow and leaves.

Trails are reasonably well covered but ungroomed. I skated; classic likely would have been more fun here. The black loop is probably worth avoiding; the ruts and lumps make for a very unstable ski. But the blue loop is much more level and even and makes for a pretty enjoyable ski. Lots of tree debris and the usual large rocks in places, but if you're careful these trails can be enjoyed.
