Trail Reports

2019-2020 season
Reports 46 to 55 of 57    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec

Afternoon
Firsthand: Both
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
The County groomed today. Most of the trails have been groomed for skating but the deck is mostly moderately soft: skis sink in an inch or more and pole plants sink down into the old snow. Some of the trails near the chalet are somewhat firmer than the trails farther out. About 20% of the trails have had tracks set. The tracks are deep and clean.

Groomed today, very pretty out! The lit loop is tracked and a few other closer trails. No classic tracks on "I" or any other farther loops. Soft skate track most other places and only about 90% rolled and a single pass so rather narrow with ungroomed corners. Watch the powder corners! Easy to break through the deck, most of "I" was shredded. Still beats what they have in Madison though.

Firsthand: Freestyle Secondhand
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
While there still is plenty of snow (the pack is about 8"), the trails are littered with oak leaves, twigs, and acorns, so probably don't use use your best skis. The skating was good this morning even though it did not get below freezing last night. The deck is firmly packed and varies from mushy to squeaky to icy and edge control is iffy in many stretches. A classic skier with skins reported good skiing even with the plethora of oak leaves in the tracks.

Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
No new grooming as of this morning. The skating deck is getting hard and crusty in many places, though fast. The edges of the deck still have some corduroy leftover from last Friday's grooming. The classic tracks have intermittent stretches of oak leaves.

It looks like the County combed the skating deck yesterday but did not set new classic tracks. With temps in the mid-20s this morning, skating was quite good and fast with edge control but lots of oak leaves and other debris throughout the trails. The classic tracks have oak leaves in most spots: the Donut Loop is especially full, but parts of Flyway are mostly clear.

Lots of leaf litter, but a nice track and firm skate lane. Great skiing and a great warming house. The new lights are reportedly awesome.

Skiing at Tower Ridge just doesn't get any better than this. Everything was groomed today. The skating deck is firm with just enough loose snow on top to be fast but with easy edge control. The classic tracks are deep and fast and almost devoid of oak leaves.

No grooming has been done. The deck has been fairly well skated-in, especially in the loops near the chalet, not so much farther out. The deck is a bit rutted. The classic tracks are excellent. They've been skied-in and are fast and deep with only occasional oak leaves.

[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
The 3" of new powder snow we received late this afternoon has not been groomed, however the deck beneath is firm and the skating is actually quite good. The snow is rather moist and fast and you can just sit back on your skis and enjoy. There are intermittent tracks where people have skied in the tracks set a few days ago. Still no daytime skiing allowed until Monday, Dec 16th, after the deer hunting muzzle loading season ends at sundown Sunday. But the lights are on until 9 pm.

Great skate deck and tracks, just a few oak leaves. All trails are
groomed. It's wonderful to have early season snow, and the trails cleared of debris. Enjoy!
