Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Partial, Rock skis ]
Trails survived the big meltdown for the most part. About third of the trails were open, ranged from excellent to fair depending on the trail. Very thin base though with lots of small debris on trail.

[ Trails Open: Partial, Rock skis ]
Had a nice ski on the “Cookie Trail” with granddaughter #1 and was pleasantly surprised as fresh track had been set in places, allowing for skate DP variety and side by side conversation. A hot cocoa break and out later on the “Bunny Trail” with granddaughter #2 found another not all groomed section, but still skiable. Mostly good for both, but found a rock or two and was glad I had older expendable skis on. Later heard someone had skied the ungroomed Nutcracker but I was tapped out from the day. Back again tomorrow to keep up my rigorous training.

Given the meltdown, the trails that are open are actually very nice. Rock skis required as you will occasionally hit something that will stop a ski from gliding, but those areas are relatively few. In my 18K ski today I did fall twice and hit something two other times, but there are long stretches of the open trails that would otherwise qualify as quite nice and fast. Skied Silver Strider, XC Express, Nekoosa, Wolf Tracks, Nepcos Cruise and Sleigh Ride. Mostly nice with a few problem areas. Under the circumstances, I was very happy.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, Rock skis ]
The Pisten Bully was out Friday night and tilled up and set track on a handful of trails! 20+ km now groomed including Nekoosa and part of Wolf Tracks. Crews are chipping away at removing downed trees from the trail system. Some trails have rocks and bare spots on them...use caution! We only recommend skiing on the freshly groomed trails.

[ Trails Open: Partial, B skis ]
After the big meltdown and blow through there’s still something left. Some unknown grooming equipment cleared most of the debris, along with, I’m sure, some hand picking. What we skied would qualify as OK spring skiing. Very similar with the previous 17"+ reduced to a glacier like slab. Which is to say, not all bad, if fact, considering the options, the very Midwest, “Could be worse!”. As noted, B skis and modified expectations will net you a substantially good outing. 10-15k, maybe more. Even some snowed in aged and climate modified tracks made for acceptable DP. Expect to see friends.

Night
Grooming
[ Trails Open: Partial, Rock skis ]
The recent high temperatures, rain, and winds really did a number to the trails. However, the base on the trails is still mostly intact with an average base of about 2 inches. Groomers were out Thursday night to start removing trees and debris from the trail system and managed to groom up about 15 km of trails. Expect a range of conditions from poor to good with no new classic tracks set. There are scattered icy and thin/bare spots throughout so you may want to walk some portions. We do not recommend skiing any of the ungroomed trails as they are very icy and could have trees down across them.

[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
Conditions were beautiful at Winter Park today. Everything groomed was first class. Some segments were still closed because they crossed unfrozen wetlands, primarily. Wolf Tracks was open to a cabin about halfway. River Run was closed, otherwise just about everything else was open with a nice classic track as well.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Classic tracks are now set on all but a few trails! Everything is firming up really well after the 10-13 inches we received early Saturday morning and it's looking almost like midwinter out here! Groomers were out Saturday night and have reset the classic tracks and skate decks throughout most of the park. Trails are skiing really well with excellent coverage.

Really nice classic ski at sunset. Tracks were great. Main trail system groomed well and pretty firm considering amount of new snow. Some of the outer loops not groomed yet.

Excellent early season conditions. Groomers are working hard to firm up the base - main trails are skiing great. Nearly good ski conditions.
