2021-2022 season

Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Partial, Rock skis ]
Over the past few days we've had some snow, some rain, and a couple below-freezing mornings, but the net result on the ski trails was patchy areas of crusty snow and quite a bit of bare ground. The first two hills on the yellow trail offered a place for up-and-down repeats, but it's time to move on to other trails or other pursuits. Thanks to the City and the grooming crew for a very good season.

[ Bare ground ]
I "skied" for an hour on the green and red, of which 20 minutes was shuffling on bare ground with several deep puddles to navigate. I think that's a wrap on the season at SMF.

[ Good skis ]
The flat side of t he yellow trail in Superior is 99.9% connected and 99% covered. We classic skied midday and the skate deck was so smooth - would be a great place to skate on crust! We used our good skis with no problem.

This may be SMF's swan song for the season. There will be skiable snow but use caution. Given the great base they have had it is melting surprisingly fast- some opening areas on some of the hills. This morning's skate was a combination of fairly fast partly frozen corn snow to slow mush and slush (only on part of the purple 'field' portion). The sections where there was more tree coverage were actually slower as I think the 'Pine tree effect' kept the conditions warmer there. Open sections were nice and fairly fast and firm. The flat portion of the yellow was better than the hilly portion. I, again, want to thank SMF for the awesome and consistent grooming, as always. It is so nice to go to a trail and get consistent skate grooming, despite the day of the week. Thank you and see you next year!

Due to the warming temps, our groomer is not able to get on the ski trails. Trails are open for skiing, however conditions are fading fast.

Stopped by SMF for the first time. Fun trail system, beautiful forest. Warm temps overnight didn't set the deck up much but the surface snow was corn snow and glide was pretty decent. Just a few sprinkles during the ski. A few dirty and thin spots here and there might warrant B skis but we were using good skis and had no issues. Had a really fun ski with the boys, enjoying the balmy temps. Bumped into the groomers who were working on testing new solar lights for next year. They said they won't groom again until it freezes down and the coverage remains adequate. Look forward to getting back here some day.

Got out there mid morning and had fresh grooming on red and green. Purple was groomed yesterday (including the connector) and was really fast but controlled. The yellow had not been groomed since the last little snow and a bit slower. Very sparse trail debris and a few dirty areas but no ski damage. The base is still deep and we should have some great spring skiing. I hope they continue their regular grooming until its gone! Thank you again City of Superior for consistently great conditions all winter. Please support this great trail system.

We set out to ski the yellow and it had about a half inch of fresh snow on it so we did the purple instead which had brand new tracks set and fresh cord. The entire road to the trail was also freshly groomed and the tracks and cord were still intact...snowmobiles stayed to the other side. Stuck my pole into the deep stuff and there are at least 20 inches left to groom!

Firm and fast! Shade-protected and newly groomed sections are great. Other areas are somewhat icy.

Decent conditions on Friday morning. The red, green and blue loops had the best conditions, with only a handful of icy spots under the trees. The purple loop had more icy spots and tree debris. The yellow loop was fairly rough with some ruts and damage on the downhills. It was still really nice overall though, and I saw the groomers out while I was skiing.
