Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
A late afternoon ski was super enjoyable on this old school / classical / beautiful and flowy trail system! The trails were solidly tracked throughout. Debris was scattered here and there, but nothing to prevent great gliding. One always departs Korkki with that nordisk hygge feeling!

Skied Korkki Thursday. A lot of debris in the track, as you would expect. Despite that it was surprisingly good with waxless skis. Recent higher temps may make conditions icy. I'm gonna wait for new snow before I return.

Track is in great shape, thanks to the groomers. Some small debris on the trails from wind, but nothing that will get in the way, except a deer head and spine severed by a wolf overnight! Just beautiful conditions, 6km loop and IkoMaki is in great shape. Cold morning, Merry Christmas to all.

Mark Helmer says: Merry Christmas gentleman. I groomed Dorothy's and the 7.5k loop. Ran out of time and batteries to do everything. Many trees down yet again. I may have time in the morning to try and get the back loop open. We'll see. If not I'll be out first thing in the morning on Monday. If I wasn't Scandinavian I would be discouraged. Just learned that there are more trees down after I got in.

Mark Helmer reports: I dressed the trail this afternoon. Probably again tomorrow. Dave Johnson adds: It has been snowing all day in the Duluth area, a very light fine snow. It will be cold and slow but wonderful skiing at Korkki.

Pure bliss! Groomers have done an amazing job clearing all the downed trees on the trail! Groomed and tracked right up to the 5K cut off. Groomer has warned us of a water pit at the bottom of the sleep hill just before the 4K cutoff. Thank goodness for the warning to walk down the sides. We did our part to clear sticks while Dr. Chip freed many bent over trees and then performed surgery on my wet boot! Left at 1:00 - amazing day!

Nearly 2 feet of wet heavy snow fell on the Korkki Nordic trails this week. Above freezing temperatures, heavy snow and the significant numbers of downed trees made for a difficult task just to get the trail cleared to begin grooming. After 4 days of Herculean effort by Mark Helmer and his volunteer crew, the 5k at Korkki will be open for skiing at 10:30 Sunday. Mark plans on working on the back 5k of trail over the next few days.
