Firsthand: Classic
[ Rock skis ]
Nice to be back at Greenbush after an extended absence. Our dedicated groomers have done amazing work with very little snow. I classic skied a rainbow with waxless skis and temps above freezing. Some track debris filled and not so good, and some track was pretty descent. I have to rate it a delightful ski. Still lots of miles and smiles to be had on skinny skis at Greenbush.

Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
The skate decks on all trails have held up quite well with overnight temps above freezing. The classic tracks show more bare spots. The skate lanes are fairly fast and still firm. There is more debris on all trails mostly on the green and purple loops. Beware of bark from the dead ash trees. (see photo) The bark will stop your ski. It will also stick to the kick wax on classic skis. I didn't see much of it on the down hills but it will steal your momentum on some of the climbs. More snow is needed.

Firsthand: Freestyle Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
All skate lanes were groomed last night. I skied all loop this morning. All loops were fast and firm. Some caution in the pine areas where we seem to get as much debris falling from the trees as snowfall. Also falling bark from the dead ash trees is increasing on the purple loop. Hopefully we don't lose everything with today's warm afternoon sunshine. Unfortunately the warmer weather also brings out more boot and dog traffic on the trails.

Nice morning ski! Thin layer of powdery corduroy on a hard base. Could have used good skis...but the backside of purple has a bit of dirt and debris present. Thanks to the dog walkers for moving their bloodhound out of the way on the long runout around mile 3. A 130 lb dog meeting a 250 lb skier leads to bad outcomes! :).

Another half inch of fluffy snow fell on Greenbush overnight. The snow fell on a hard icy base from yesterdays thaw and overnight deep freeze. For the moment the trails, both skate lanes and classic track look pristine and ski fairly fast and firm.

Surprisingly good conditions- skate deck is firm and the 1/2" snow yesterday really added a bit of softness to the top. You can see things are getting a bit thin though and a bit of debris is starting to come through in the tree spots. Didn't use the tracks at all- they have seen better days at this point.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
All skate lanes were groomed last evening. The half inch of new snow groomed in well with the ground ice from earlier in the week. I skated all areas this morning in single digit temperatures. The skate lanes slowed a bit with the cold new snow. I expect things will quicken later in the day with rising temps. There is good coverage with only a few thin spots showing. The classic track looks good. It's very clean but not deep. We have amazingly good skiing with the tiny amounts of snowfall on Greenbush all winter.

Greenbush trails are still remarkably good after the thaw on Tuesday. The skate deck is rock hard and fast but very manageable. The classic track is not deep but still even better than earlier in the week. Looks like dusting of lake effect snow is falling on the trails today.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
As it has in the past, Greenbush surprises. I went out there with low expectations, fully prepared to immediately turn around and head back home. To my pleasant surprise the trails had just been groomed and were in very good condition. The groomers have done a masterful job breaking-up the hard crusty snow. I skied most of the trails and saw very good coverage. I went from the green to the purple trail and the cutoff gives you a good sense of what the groomers had to do. The cutoff was ungroomed, hard, and crusty. You wouldn't want to ski on it for any length of time. With the sun shinning it was hard to have a better day on skis.

Grooming Scheduling
[ Trails: Closed, Bare ground ]
The ski trails are closed at this time! I did a surveillance ski early this morning. Temps did not get below freezing overnight. By about 9:30 the trails were softening quickly. Jeff is working the snow catcher to bring snow onto the trails from the sides. As of 10 AM today there is good snow cover on all loops. Our base is very thin as it is and will be icy by tonight when the temperatures drop. Hopefully we'll have a base left to groom after today. Again, please stay off the trails and pass this on to all who may consider skiing or hiking on the ski trails at Greenbush.
