Notes

The Lester-Amity trail offers 15K of varied terrain for beginner to experienced skiers through pine, aspen, and birch forests. An additional 3K circles the Lester Park Golf Course and is accessible from the main Lester-Amity Trail. The openness of the golf course offers an excellent place for beginning cross-country skiers, and several short cuts are available. There is also a 5K trail portion that is lit in the mornings and evenings.

Fantastic ... In so many ways. The trails are groomed. The tracks had a few bare spots, which were easily avoidable. The skate deck looked perfect. In one sense, this was the ski of my life. Nine weeks ago I collapsed while running on these trails. A genetically mishapen heart valve was to blame. Two months ago I had open heart surgery. Today's ski could not have been much sweeter!

Lester is groomed with tracks set throughout most of system. Skate deck had not set up yet, but there were a few folks out skating. Tracks were a little soft with some thin areas underneath the pines. Lester will be excellent with just a little more snow. Your good skis would be fine for skating. Use the B's for classic until we get a bit more snow.

Night
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
3-4 inches of new, fairly dense snow. It's dried out substantially from when it fell; we were on zeros and scales which kicked OK, but hardwax would probably be best. Trails were not groomed. There was a nice skied in track around the perimeter loop. Only one or two spots where you might hit dirt or roots.

Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Partial, Rock skis ]
About an inch of fluffy snow made Lester skiable this afternoon. Skis tracked decently well in the new stuff, skidding over an icy and bumpy base. Were the conditions good? No. Average? No. But I wasn't on a manmade hamster wheel!

[ Trails Open: Most, Rock skis ]
Everything minus the hills up from the lower parking lot are skiable. Definitely not bluebird conditions, with thin/icy coverage and serious ruts. I did a double pole workout, although I think skating would be possible with caution. A few downhills were sketchy due to ice and culverts creating jumping ramps. Snow conditions (depth, ice, and walker footprints) improve as you head up the hill. I'm guessing conditions will hold on for at least a few more days. Thanks to the groomers!

Afternoon

[ Rock skis ]
Upper loops have been rolled but not tracked. There is just enough snow for a fun ski if you have low expectations. A few rocks and a couple of damp spots. Lower loops have been heavily damaged by many, many walkers, but there is enough snow to ski them. Beautiful day in the woods.

Surprisingly ski-able! Groomed, but not tracked. Used rock skis. No significant bare patches. Snow is soft but not slushy as of this morning, and not even too slow! Great conditions for the time of year and the paltry amount of snow so far!
