Notes

Very scenic with views of the Flambeau River and a heavily timbered landscape. Portions of the upper loop and cutoffs on the east side of the lower loop are more challenging. There is a three-sided shelter on the west side of the upper loop.

Skied all the trails. Nicely groomed wide trails all groomed for skating. No tracks today--but the ranger said they will set soon. Didn't see anyone else all day. Just me and the trees.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
After the fresh couple inches of snow I went out to start cutting and leveling but when I got to the north parking lot I noticed the groomer's bar that holds all the teeth started to break. So I was unable to cut the rest of the trail. I did manage to use ratchet straps to hold the teeth up while I finished making a single pass around the entire system just to help pack it down. There is fresh cord but it is very soft with no track and is only on the left side of the trail for most of the system. The plan is to be operational again tomorrow and will finish grooming before the weekend. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Grooming

All trails were groomed today. Other than some debris from yesterday's winds, the trails are in great shape. The skate deck is excellent for the most part. The tracks for classic skiing are shallow in a few spots and not fully formed but are still good. Note: Ridge Run segment closed.

Fantastic conditions at Flambeau today! I skate skied the figure 8 and it was just perfect. There were a few twigs and animal tracks but nothing to fret about. Classic tracks were set but not used yet so uncertain of condition. It is snowing now but I am hoping these great conditions last through the weekend. Thank you Joe! Excellent job grooming!

Grooming

We received about an inch of snow over the weekend so all the trails were groomed/tracked today with the exception of the two alternate loops on the Rim Creek Section. The beginning portion was still very hard to cut so it may be icy yet. The track that was set today seemed to be extremely brittle and shallow in the areas that were previously icy. The skate deck in in great condition.

Southern end of trail system was all groomed and nice skiing but could use a couple of inches of fresh snow to groom in and level a bit. Snuss trail all the way up to Hwy 70 was flat, wide and wonderful fresh corduroy. Just the nicest skiing you could ask for with the best northwoods scenery you can find. Thank you Joe Kraetke!

First time skiing this trail. Very scenic, nice rolling terrain, and pleasantly surprised by the quality of the grooming after the freeze and thaw of last weekend. Great trail to check out.

All trails were tracked/groomed this morning. As I suspected after cutting multiple times yesterday, the trail is very icy from the trail head on Cty Hwy W out to the beginning of Short Swing. Tracks are very shallow to almost not existent due to the extremely hard base. Skate skiing should still be good as I was able to cut the top layer. Once you get beyond that short segment, the rest of the trail system is in good condition. Tracks can be shallow in a few spots but overall they are great. It should be fairly fast skate conditions now. Grooming operations will slow down until more snow arrives so I can mix it in.
Note: Ridge Run segment remains closed

All loops were cut a minimum of twice today. After the candlelight ski event, the Short Swing loop from the trail head on County Hwy W became extremely icy. The base is rock solid. I cut it at least half a dozen times with very little penetration of the groomer teeth. I'm hoping that the temps today and tomorrow will help it soften it up. All the other loops to the northern trail head on Snuss Blvd were cut twice which turned out great. I will be back on the trail tomorrow for one more round of cutting and then i will set track. Track may be shallow and icy yet for the first portion coming out of the trail head on W but once you get beyond Short Swing it should be great conditions again.

Skied the tracks over a couple laps in this morning up through squirrel and pinery. Couldn't tell if snuss was tracked since it had some fluff over the trail. This trail systems a hidden gem with it's pristine forest, rolling hills, and quiet isolation. You will likely see more deer and turkeys than other skiers. It's a very peaceful ski, lacking the traffic you might see at more pampered destinations an hour each direction. The candlelight ski is 6-9 this evening.
