Trail Reports

2017-2018 season
Reports 44 to 53 of 56    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec
Tuesday, January 30, 2018
Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Rock skis ]
Hard-packed, icy, and rutted. Don't bother trying to ski until more snow falls or until a new grooming breaks up the ice. I saw several people give up after a few minutes.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Skate deck groomed this afternoon. Classic track is in good condition. There are still a couple bare/thin spots in the windswept areas on hill tops.

Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
I put B skis because there's a little grass at the top of the hills. The groomers have done a great job. The course is packed, and tracked; skate deck was good, albeit a bit a bit soft, as you'd expect 2 days after a big dump; Classic track looked full depth, and solid. Great skiing in scenic Lauderdale.

[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Classical tracks were set. As others have mentioned a few blades of grass poking out on the tops of hills. Otherwise good conditions.

Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
As others have reported, the U of M golf course was not tracked today. That is, unless you count the wheel tracks near the east loop. I doubt that they were intended to serve as classic tracks, but they certainly worked. Quite a few people were using them as such and if you, like me, prefer not having your skis slip sideways, they were preferable to skiing on the packed trails. Snowplowing and herringboning were challenges since the adjacent snow was deep and soft, but since that course doesn't present much need for either, they were not significant challenges.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
The skate deck is fluffy, loose and wonderful. Only some grass on the windswept ridges. No classic track. Note: there are only 2 loops, not the usual 3 [As reported by the groomers earlier this season -- Ed]. The East loop, to your right, is counter-clockwise and is a combined loop of the usual east & center loops (~4.5 - 5K?). The West loop to your left is clockwise.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
The golf course is groomed but there are no classic tracks yet. Given the amount of powder we got, it will be mid week before the trails are in super good shape and hard packed. The classic tracks will be put in before the weekend.

Secondhand
[ Trails Open: All ]
I called the U of M Center for Outdoor Recreation at 10:30 a.m. and got the word that the U of M golf course will be groomed at track set "within two hours." I plan to be there when it's done!

Great flow to the new, wide, roughly 6km 2-loop design at the U of M golf course - thanks, groomers. Good coverage in most places, but rock skis are recommended due to occasional cart paths and frequent grassy hilltops. Looks like both loops have been skied in both directions. Great destination for a fun, easy ski.

[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Skate skied the trails Tuesday night and it was beautiful! As previously stated, there are now only two loops, one short and one long. The snow was a little soft and there is some grass poking through on the tops of hills, but otherwise a very wonderful ski! It was fun ski the new loops - the longer one takes you all over to some new terrain. Thanks, groomers!
