2020-2021 season
Reports 17 to 26 of 67    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Skied around Brownie Lake from Wirth beach and back. Best classic tracks I've seen this winter. Tracks were a little windblown on Brownie lake but otherwise great. Stayed warm from soaking up some sun.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Skate lane groomed in bog and butler. Only able to get one pass down the middle in the bog because of mechanical issues, but at least the annoying rut that was in the middle of the skate deck is fixed. Classic tracks mostly intact.

Wirth South trails are still in great shape for skate and classic - race ski ready! Skate deck is a bit compacted by this afternoon, but good for balance and much faster than yesterday, even without any new glide wax. Classic tracks are mostly intact everywhere. The Bog and Butler loops are a great place to avoid the windchill and enjoy the bright afternoon sunshine. I saw more skiers on these loops today than on any other day this season! Apparently everyone knows the ancient Norwegian proverb, "There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes." Wirth Beach parking lot almost full this afternoon!

Morning
Firsthand: Classic
[ Good skis ]
The groomers captured all of the new snow very well - the course was in great shape! There were still classic tracks in many places through the bog and Eloise, but the deck worked better for me, especially in spots with snow blown into the tracks. There were no bare spots or concerning areas. The downhills were a little crusty since they had been snowplowed out, but getting an edge was easy. Even the reeds in the pond were pretty well covered.

The wooded areas in Jar Hill, Butler and Quaking Bog are all in great to good condition. Be careful on a couple of the twisty downhills in Butler, they are scraped down to ice. Most of the classic tracks are in good shape in these areas and not too wind blown. Sadly these areas had some walkers and a snowshoer who clomped down the middle of the skate lane.

There was plenty of fresh snow when I started out from Wirth Lake, and more continued falling. I had expected South Wirth to have more debris and rough spots under the snow, but it was surprisingly good. The fresh snow was very loose since it came after the grooming. There was icy crust underneath, but the loose stuff on top made all of the hills slow, up and down. No trouble with traction- the opposite, really. No visible tracks in most places due to all of the snow.

Groomed and new track set after sunset. Should set up well overnight. Excellent coverage. Good skis no problem.

Afternoon

[ B skis ]
Conditions were hard packed and fast in most areas. Some places getting soft and sticky. Leaves, debris and few bare spots on Quaking Bog trails and on land near Wirth Beach. Appreciated skiing the Puoli hybrid today with the warm temps. Hoping for good snow (and not rain or wintry mix) tonight!

Skiable but there are some challenges with leaf, twig and bark debris as well as a few icy sections and nearly bare sections. Tried to follow and complete the City of Lakes Loppet 30K skate course but initially missed a few sections and repeated others, so I skied a longer distance than the actual course. The Wirth trails north of Glenwood are in good to great shape except for the Judy Loop.
