Trail was in poor condition. It had not been groomed since the prior weekend's snow?! Wetland on the north end had been flooded by the prior week's thaw but refrozen ice could be safely crossed. Lots of foot traffic with several sections of deep footprints made during the thaw. Rutted but skate-able because the ruts had not frozen and snow was only an inch and half deep. Several patches of ice. With caution, Woodland Edge's downhills and the backside hill from Wedge HIll Savanna to Wetland were skiable, However, I chose not to risk any of the side loops because I didn't want to press my luck. It was about 13 degrees and sunny with a stiff west wind. I used FastWax Teal LF.

Checked the Park website at 9:30 this morning and found out they were grooming today. Headed out at 10:10 am, 15 degrees, on new groomed skate lane, nicely tilled and corduroy reset. Some small surface areas could not be reset but there's enough to easily skate. First and only ones out. Previous footprints from obnoxious and/or oblivious hikers were mostly rehabbed but some were frozen in place. We did the inner loop to the top, the two cutovers, and the beaver pond, but we did none of the regroomed outer loops. It was fast but very controllable. The website threatened to open the trails to hiking on Sunday, so get out soon to enjoy some good last ski outings. Classic tracks were wisely not redone, but retain their shape with some surface glazing. Thanks to the Park for excellent grooming this season.

Glorious skiing! My first time here but not my last. Beautiful marshes, woods, hills, prairie. It was all groomed this morning except for a couple cut across trails but they were packed. Classic trails looked excellent. Skating was soft with this dry snow but still super fun. Friendly ranger/groomer and staff. We'll be back!

Heaven in Minnesota today! Skiing could not get any better! A small amount of fresh snow last night over the freshly groomed trails made for a perfect day of skiing! We skied the entire outer loop. All hills were fun but completely safe.... no out of control screams from me. Get out this weekend and ski. Thank you to the groomers!

Good coverage with ungroomed fresh snow over a moderately firm base. Classic tracks looked consistent without bare areas - skate deck was covered but not groomed.

Much better than I thought it would be. Hard and fast trails, but not much icy. A grooming machine came through while we were skiing around 11am, which broke up any iciness on the skate deck. Some tree debris in the woodsy areas. All in all, very acceptable conditions and a lovely Minnesota winter day.

Classic skied my usual loop which includes the Woodland Edge Trail, Wetland Trail and Wedge Hill Savanna Trail. I skied from about 3:30-4:45pm and it appears that the trails were groomed earlier in the day. Classic tracks were well-defined but slick so I went faster than normal (for a 73 yr old). There is an icy area across the entire trail for maybe 50 ft or so where the trail runs adjacent to the Savanna Campground. It looked like some marsh ice melted when we had the 40 degree day a few days ago and then flowed across the trail and froze. It requires slowing down and ice skating across the ice so be careful. The temperature dropped from approx 20 F when I started to ski to 15F when I took off my skis and got in my car. Some sunlight broke through as I was finishing across the Wedge Hill Savanna Trail. The wind was nice and strong and cold. Thankful for the folks that groom William O'Brien. My favorite place along the St. Croix.

I got there a little before 1 pm and they had just been groomed (saw the groomer finishing). The trails were in great condition with just a few small sections with debris from the trees. Get in a ski now if you can!

Skied the 4.6 mile loop that includes the Wedge Hill Savanna Trail, and there was enough snow to ski on. I classic skied and overall the classic tracks were intact. Skiing down the Woodland Edge trail there were plenty of leaves and other tree debris in the tracks but I just got out of the tracks and skied on the skate deck until I got to the railroad crossing. All in all another pleasant ski at William O'Brien. We do need some new snow. The skate deck looked good as well.

Notes on the DNR website for this park are accurate, currently pretty good condition, not lots of snow but enough. The skate deck looks fantastic. The classic tracks seem to be an after thought at times, washed out, missing, full of leaves or a combination of all these. That one slope on the Prairie Loop is just slick and fast, quite a joy ride!
