A nice set of trails with rolling hills. The first lighted trail system in the metro, it still attracts a lot of after-work skiers.

2019-2020 season

Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Some debris (sticks and leafs) but incredibly good conditions. On some of the flats you can find some wind blown icy spots - but I skied French two days in row as it's so nice. Definitely go here if you're tired of short loops elsewhere. B skis though, I wouldn't use my A skis yet.

Snow coverage and conditions very good throughout the system, just a very few minor icy and bare spots, which is why they are rated just fair. No classic tracks. And you tend to underestimate some of the hill climbing out there!

French is still in good condition. There are some leaves to watch out for and an occasional thin spot or icy patch but it is very manageable. I suggested B skis in my ski rating but I would be comfortable with good skis there. The downhill section of the new Medicine Trail is a little icy at the top but the snow is good near the bottom so you can control your turn into the main trail.

There's a new trail in town! Enjoyed the new portion of Medicine Lake Loop (see photos). Trails packed, not tracked in very good condition. Few thin spots on Lagoon Loop.

Beeeeautiful skate conditions this morning at French. I skied from NW corner of the park to the SE corner. Trails were covered, packed and firm throughout system. Be sure to check it out under the lights sooner than later! No classic tracks.

A top 10 ski at French this afternoon. The groomers did a great job rolling out the fresh snow. No classic tracks but a great skate deck.

Skied around 3 pm, snow still coming down lightly. The trails had a good 2-3" of snow that was being skied in, on top of a groomed skate deck. No classic tracks, but hard to tell for sure with the snowfall. Base appeared to be warm still, as there were some rutted areas, soft sections and general unevenness. Lots of folks out touring around. Had a very enjoyable ski, so glad to be off the man-made snow loops!

Tried to skate at French around noon. Full disclosure: I freely admit to being a technique challenged skier with balance problems. That said, I found French to be soft, uneven, and unpredictable. This turned my ski into a constant battle for balance with ruts and wet snow regularly taking control of my skis. While it's mostly white, the ground underneath the snow has not yet frozen so there are several places that are fresh snow over slush/mud/ground. I skied Lagoon, Meadow and the Lakeview trails. I never hit bare ground and was able to negotiate the soft dirty sections without fear of damaging my skis but I would recommend B skis or rock skis. I tried to get a picture but the pic is not really representative of much of what I saw -- it's better in many places but worse in others. Good skiers with solid technique and people just looking for a nice tour through the woods will probably find the conditions enjoyable. For me, I need a hard freeze and more snow to smooth out the trails before it will be an enjoyable ski.

The ski trails were surprisingly good. There are a few bad spots but they are easy to avoid. There are a fair amount of leaves on the trail but these are mostly small leaves (I didn't do the lagoon trail). I would use B skis or rock skis even, especially if you go at night. The downhill on the new Medicine Trail is the only part that is a little tricky as there are a few ruts in the trail. The trail hasn't been groomed since Wednesday and as of 9 this morning the groomer was not out.

[ Trails Open: Most, Rock skis ]
All trails were packed except the Challenge Hill. No classic track set. Very soft with lots of leaf debris. Lagoon was almost not skiable in sections due to the thin snow over a thick leaf base. Exposed pavement near the playground area. There was exposed ground in several turns, particularly the tee between Lakeview and Meadow. Meadow and Medicine were actually quite good, just needed the snow to setup. Skyview was a little rough with some exposed tree roots coming out of the wetlands area. The climb out of Lakeview to the visitor's center had a lot of exposed ground at the base turn.
