New Reports Report Requests

Notes

A great mix of beginner and expert ski trails. With the inclusion of the Jerry Jolly Trails there is about 25 km groomed for skating and classic. There is also an additional 15 km of classic only trails. With views of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands, this is a very scenic area to ski. There is a nice lodge which sells snacks and food as well as a ski patrol and small downhill area.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Thursday evening Abbey Road, Jolly, Northern Lights, Skid Road, Telford, and Seagull Connector were groomed with new track set. Conditions are very good with all trails open and 99% safe for good skis. The trails have great snow cover with a firm pole plant. The summer trail work has left some isolated high spots that are now mostly showing up as thin spots in the classic tracks but easily avoided. Grooming plans: Friday morning Anchor, Seagull, and Buzz are being groomed. Friday afternoon all the classic only trails will be groomed with new track set. The weekend should be great skiing. Photos are from Thursday afternoon before the weekend grooming.

Skied the 46 km loop again today. Conditions were awesome. Like everywhere, we could use some snow. The tracks are a few days old, but holding up nice. Could use some touching up in a few spots. A couple of "dirty" snow areas are poking up on Buzz and some other trails. Glide was great, grip was great, with skin skis. Conditions are still good for A skis. See ya on the trails!

Been classic skiing the trails everyday since Dec 25. Including three night outings with a headlamp. Distances range from 15 km to 46 km. Everyday conditions have been consistent. Well groomed, tracked, good glide and good kick. Like spreading butter on a warm biscuit. Today was phenomenal. Put in a 46 km linkage of trails and rarely skied the same section twice. The tracks were great the entire time, skate deck was solid. Hope the weather cooperates, with great conditions like this, Birkie training is on at Ashwabay, if that's your thing! If not it still the place to ski!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Skiing: All of the skate trail has been groomed overnight (except the Cut-off-to Seagull). The Buzz was groomed and the track was set. The rest of the classic tracks skied really well Sunday. Fat Bike: Conditions are firming up. Still low PSI (3-2 psi) is recommended. If you are struggling let some air out.

Have skied last three days at Ashwabay, and trails are excellent since the big snowfall. Grooming is great and classic tracks look excellent also. Ashwabay has become my favorite place to ski. Lots of km of excellent trails, situated in a huge forest (many square miles) such that they don't need the trails to wind back and forth to get the length. There is room for straight trails, and so you really feel like you're in the back woods when skating there! Photo is from two days ago, but nothing has changed.

Thank you to the Mt. Ashwabay xc ski trail groomers! Bravo! Classic tracks were freshly groomed and awesome today on all trails I skied. The snow was more firm than previous days. The snow was fast with glide, and had grip for kick and quick up hill ascents. Skied 35 km and it felt more like 20. I would recommend skiing Mt. Ashwabay as a beginner, intermediate, or advanced xc skier. The atmosphere is friendly, beautiful, peaceful, trails options are numerous, and crowding is not an issue. Ski on.

Nordic Trails: Very good to excellent conditions for the Holiday weekend. Classic only trails were groomed with new track set on New Years Eve. Abbey Road, Northern Lights, Skid Road, Roller Coaster, and The Buzz have been re-groomed skate/classic. It's a beautiful sunny day, hope to see you on the trails. Fat Bike Update: Ashwabay Fat Bike Trails are groomed as of noon today! Conditions are soft. Use low PSI! There were couple of riders out while I was grooming and they seemed to be doing ok once they adjusted tire for the conditions. Note: The trailhead location is a different location. Look for the billboard sign in the parking lot, kind of near the chair lift. Enjoy!
